Page 1 0 Samuel W. Arnett '33 entered Chapter Grand on December 22, 2016. Sam was born in In- dianapolis in 1911. He attended Butler University and graduated with a B.S. in business. While at Butler, Sam played varsity base- ball. He was one of the original Phi Delt undergraduate mem- bers and the last of the original surviving group to live in the new Chapter House completed in 1929. Sam enjoyed sharing many stories about Hilton U. Brown; speaking at Chapter Set Up and Serve Dinners, and initiation ceremonies back in the day. Not only was Sam the oldest living Indiana Gamma, he was also the oldest brother in the bond nationally and one of the oldest Americans in the country at the time of his passing. He was delight- ed that the Chapter returned to Butler's campus in 2009 and would drive over to walk the campus and visit the chapter house. The undergraduate members always welcomed him. Sam, like his father, graduated with a master's degree in phar- maceutical chemistry. Upon graduation, Sam was employed by Eli Lilly and Company as a research chemist for 34 years. While at Lilly, he met and mar- ried Rosalind Woods and had two children, Anne and David. Sam was an avid fisherman and champion skeet and trap shooter. Because of his love of baseball, he started Little League Baseball on the India- napolis eastside, which gave hundreds of boys a chance to experi- ence baseball. After Rosie's passing he later married Dorothy Jane Withrow. Sam is survived by daughter Anne and son David, five granddaughters, and 18 great grand- children. See Bit O' History on page 12 for more. IndIana Gamma Chapter Grand "In Coelo Quies Est" (In Heaven There Is Rest) Kenneth Rau Woolling '39 entered Chapter Grand on April 16 at the age of 99. With the ex- ception of his deep love for his family, his lifelong passion was medicine. He was always fasci- nated by the subject and inspired by its principles. A superb clini- cian and scholar, he dedicated his life to this profession, for which he had a true calling. Born March 6, 1918, in Indianapolis, he married the love of his life, Catherine Margaret McColl, on March 20, 1948. She preceded him in death in October 2003, after 55 happy years of marriage; children Kenneth Rau Woolling Jr. and Mary Catherine Woolling survive. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, during his sophomore year at Indiana University Medical School, he and his classmates were stunned by the news that Japanese had attacked our naval base in Hawaii, devastating the Pacific fleet. Within the next few days, all eligible medical students were drafted into the U.S. Army. After military medical training he was abruptly re-assigned to France because of the Battle of the Bulge. He served in France, Germany, and Austria as a captain in the medical corps. As the War in Europe winded down, he boarded a ship headed for the War in the Pacific. As his ship reached the Straits of Gibraltar, they were informed on the public address system of the dropping of atom bombs on Hiroshima and Na- gasaki. Japan had surrendered and World War II was finally over! The ship was rerouted to Boston, Mass., where he was assigned at Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Ga., before returning to civilian life. He returned to Indianapolis in October 1946. In 1952, he entered private practice in Indianapolis, specializing in internal medicine and cardiovascu- lar diseases with emphasis on peripheral vascular diseases. From 1952 till his retirement in 1987, he was a member of the medical and teaching staffs and postgraduate medical education groups at Marion County General Hospital and Methodist Hospital. Dr. Woolling's awards, commissions, boards, as- sociations, published papers, and memberships are too numerous to name, but his membership with the Indiana Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta at Butler were some of his most memora- ble. He always treasured his Chapter membership at Indiana Gamma. See his written reflections on Fraternity life before his passing on page 12 of this newsletter. Fred L.
