Page 9 Φ Δ Θ T he Indiana Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta has long had a pres- tigious reputation to uphold at Butler University as well as Phi Delta Theta nationally. Jack Carr Boyd '69 joined Phi Delta Theta because he knew the members had a strong presence on campus. "I was drawn to Phi Delt Theta for its perceived men's role shown on campus for leadership, scholarship, and sports prominence during my collegiate years at Butler," Jack says. Jack's father, a real estate agent, had constantly encouraged and pushed him toward being in the same business as him. Jack, however, wanted to pursue his advertising degree. One night while at dinner, his father was still prodding him to recon- sider the real estate profession. His dad pulled out his wallet to pay for dinner when an envelope fell out. Jack picked it up for his father to return it to him, but his dad requested he take a peek inside. The envelope held his father's commission check, which Jack looked at astoundingly as it was twice the salary he was currently making. "I learned from that experience that you keep an open objec- tive to alternate opportunities so they don't pass you by," Jack says. When Jack realized he was going to be following in his father's footsteps of going into the real estate business, he said this taught him a lot about how to look for opportunities in life. "If you see an opportunity from pre- vious hard work, you can act," he says. "Today, I still look forward to the next opportunity. Work hard and invest in yourself with opportunities that can give you positive outcomes." Jack looks back on the memories of being in Phi Delta Theta and knows they have helped him since graduation and beyond. Jack says being a part of Phi Delta Theta helped prepare him for how to apply himself. "Phi Delta Theta prepared on how to respect organizational codes of conduct and how to work with others with different viewpoints to cause for a group consen- sus," Jack explains. "I wish I would have known and appreciated how short the time was going to be within my four years at the Fraternity." While an active member in the Indiana Gamma Chapter, Jack served as the social chairman and the new member chairman. He eventually came back as an alumnus and served as the Chapter advisor for a few years. Jack says it is not necessarily what Phi Delta Theta could do for him, but what he could do for Phi Delta Theta and the Chapter. "It is often from the days invested there that are the memories I remember most." As an active member, Jack says there were many brothers and mentors who had a positive impact on his time in Phi Delta Theta and on his overall college experience. "Frank Farmer, Mike Cook '65, Larry Dawson '65, Kent Harris, Ted Butz '68, Dick Eagan '70, and Steve Kinnamon just to name a few. There were many, many great men." Jack comes back to Butler for basketball games and has been able to see the Chapter grow and the campus expand. He still thinks very highly of the Indiana Gamma Chapter and continues to see the Chapter moving in a positive direction. He reflects on his time in the Chapter House and says, "We were first in pledging, first in academ- ics, and first in campus social involvement. Most of all I treasure Set Up and Serve Dinners, and afterwards, serenading the sororities and fellow fraternities. We were the best on campus!" Jack keeps busy, but is still able to stay in touch with his Indiana Gamma Brothers. "I do stay in touch with the locals and some special guys scattered across the country, which gives me roots in many places, for which I am blessed. I have the Indiana Gamma Chapter to thank for that." He encourages those who may have lost touch with Indiana Gamma to reconnect. "Just keep reaching out. There will always be a welcome hand, always from Phi Delta Theta." In addition to his primary business, Berkshire Hathaway Real Estate, Jack went on to establish his bucket list business, The Indy Trolley. He pur- chased a San Francisco trolley in 2013 and does weddings for expectant brides and grooms servicing a 100-mile radius of Indianapolis. Jack is a widower, has three children and eight grandchildren, and travels the coun- try four times a year to visit. He hopes in six and eight years to welcome his two grandsons into the Phi Delta Theta legacy. Jack lives in Noblesville, Ind., and can be reached at jack@jackboyd.com. T his year, we improved upon the precedent previously set. Hosting a day for parents of Phi Delta Theta brothers is our way of ensur- ing parents that they are always welcome in the house and to say thank you for everything that they have done for us. We are currently planning another event for the 2017-18 school year and look forward to what that will entail. We are excited to improve our relationship with our alumni this year as we are currently planning an event to reconnect these members with our active brothers. Potential events include a cook- out, a Butler basketball game, and a variety of other things. Stay tuned for more information as we work tirelessly to connect our alumni to new active brothers!
