The Delta Messenger 2 DELTA CHAPTER Class of '56 Brothers Say AGR Is "Four Years and a Lifetime" I t seems the men of the graduating class of 1956 who were members of AGR all joined for different reasons, but stayed for the same: the lifelong friendships. Joe Hasler '53, Byram (By) Dickes '54, Freddie Fredericks '53, and Richard Belcher '53 have been through it all. Whether it be business pursuits or being best men in each other's weddings, the friendships founded at Delta Chapter live on long past the time of graduation. Freddie, who admits his lack of involvement while in the active chapter, went on to become involved with AGR at the chapter and national level of the organization. "When I returned to Purdue as head of the Department of Agricultural Communications, I was asked to become a chapter advisor at Delta. I continued in that role for five years and then the national fraternity asked me to become a regional vice president," Freddie says. "During this time, my good friend and brother, Kirby Barrick, coined the term 'Four years and a lifetime.' I believe Delta undergraduates and our alumni brothers are living by those words." The Class of '56 has stayed in touch over the years, but truly reconnected during their 50th class reunion in 2006. Joe says his time at AGR allowed him to make the best friends of his life. "I wouldn't have ended up where I am without some of the people I met in AGR, both professionally and personally," Joe says. Not only did these friendships form within the walls of Delta Chapter, they extended long after graduation and into their professional lives. Five AGR brothers went on to purchase a business together, which further strengthened their brotherhood and friendships. Hal Bowman '54, Joe, By, Marvin (Frenchie) Evens '53, and Richard all went in on this business endeavor. Instead of taking dividends, Richard says, their families would take vacations together, a tradition they continue to this day. "AGR had a big impact on my life because of the encouragement and support from my brothers," By says. "They encouraged me to get involved in extracurricular activities, which is how I ended up meeting my wife. Because of my involvement, I was able to make connections that helped me get into the graduate business program, which helped me go on to have a successful career. I feel none of the above would have happened had I not joined the fraternity." Joe Hasler '53 Byram (By) Dickes '54 Freddie Fredericks '53 Richard Belcher '53 Alumni Update Robert L.
