THETA XI FOUNDATIONS FUND SCHOLARSHIPS F rom the first time Justin Kaminski '12 met Theta Xi brothers on move-in day to continuing his older brother's legacy, there was always something about Alpha Sigma that seemed like home. "Looking back, the thing about being a legacy was that I not only got a sense of pride in continuing what my brother, Jake '08, was a part of, but a sense of responsibility to build upon it and try to leave things better than when I arrived." As an undergraduate, Justin served the chapter as an officer in multiple positions, including house manager twice. In this role, there were plenty of times where he would have to assign tasks, monitor, and sometimes reprimand friends and housemates, ultimately helping prepare him for life after college. "I always say that being in Theta Xi taught me how to manage being friends and being colleagues," he said. "That is a narrow line sometimes and it is hard to judge when and where to cross it, but I think my time in Theta Xi made me much better at making that determination. Being a brother helped me understand that people learn things differently and not every solution is one-size-fits-all." Justin's favorite memories from his undergraduate years are the simple ones, like coming home late from the library and finding someone with their door open and ready to hang out, moving into the chapter house for the first time, unexpected visits from recent alumni, group meals in the dining hall, and late-night Bacci's experiences. Although he loved the parties, trips, and excitement, the little moments are what have stuck with him most. He advises current undergraduate brothers to get involved in leadership roles, try their best at mentoring those around them, and earn as much relevant career experience as possible before graduation. "At the same time, remember to make great memories together and revel in the day-to-day. Remember that the time of living together with some of your closest friends right across or down the hall doesn't last forever," he said. Justin has always held a great interest in computers and software, and is used to being the resident "computer guy." In March, he began working with Instec, a relatively small software development company, as an application specialist. In this role, he spends a good portion of his time running through deployment processes, identifying areas that can be improved, monitored, or automated, and then actually working toward those improvements. Over the years, he's also improved his cooking practice and is still into gaming, too. Justin lives in Lombard, Ill., and can be reached at jkaminski902@gmail.com. FinDing a home in alpha Sigma Justin Kaminski '12 Reflects on His Theta Xi Experience * Ritual gear donors; brothers who donated $125 or more will have their name and Alpha Sigma number embroidered into the robe of their choice, so that generations of brothers to come will know of their contributions. With the new robes, the chapter's dedication to the ritual will be likewise renewed, which is the most important factor that makes us Theta Xi men.
