Gone are the days when we could afford to retire at age 62, with time and energy on our side. With that point in mind, it is getting harder and harder to find volunteers or people who have time to volunteer. The Senior Center relies on volunteers for everything and we are in need of volunteers to help at the front desk, work in our gift shop or consignment store, operate the cash register for lunch or during Monday night Bingo. We have many scheduled options available: you can work one day a week, a couple of hours at a time, once a month or be on call when someone is not available. We need you! We also have many events that will be coming up includ- ing our Car Show and Flea Market. If you can help on Saturday, Oct. 28th, we will need help parking cars, helping in the kitchen and we also need homemade cakes. We are so THANKFUL for our volunteers and we rely on you for so many things. November is a time to say a special thank you to our volunteers that have worked so hard throughout the year. We appreciate you all and are GRATEFUL for each one of you. The next volunteer meeting will be Wednesday, November 1st at 1:00. If you have questions or comments, please call me, Lori Livingston, anytime at (704) 484-5487 or email me at llivingston@agingcouncil.org. We will be having the Volunteer Christmas Brunch Friday, December 8th at 10:00am. Please bring a breakfast item or purchase a $5.00 ticket in advance. This will be a "Tacky Christmas Sweater Day" so wear your "favorite" Christmas sweater. We had so much fun last year playing the "Dirty Santa" game that I am looking forward to play- ing it again this year! To play, you would need to bring a wrapped $5.00 gift. Please sign up at the front desk. 23 24 Gin Rummy 8-11 $ Watercolor Paint Class 9-12 Legal Aid 10:00 (by Appt. Once someone is classified as a veteran, there are numerous financial and health benefits they are eligible to receive. Yet, there is one benefit that few are aware of: Veteran's Aid and Attendance. This program is designed for wartime veterans and their spouses or surviving spouses. This provides a pension to help offset the cost of long-term care for those who require assistance with the daily activities of living. This includes including bathing, dressing, eating, toileting and transfer- ring. Any wartime veteran with 90 days of active duty, with one day beginning or ending during a period of war, is eli- gible to apply. A spouse or surviving spouse (marriage must have ended due to death of veteran) of a wartime veteran may also apply. The individual applying must qualify both medically and financially. For medical qualification, a wartime veteran or surviv- ing spouse must need the assistance of another person to perform daily tasks such as eating, dressing, etc. Being blind or in a nursing home for mental or physical incapacity or residing in an assisted living facility also qualifies. The Neal Senior Center is offering a seminar on this very topic. It will be held Tuesday, October 24 from 10:30AM-11:30AM. Greg McIntyre, Elder Law Attorney, will conduct the seminar. The seating is very limited so if you are interested in attending this seminar, which is free, please contact the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488 to pre-register. Veteran's Aid & Attendance Benefits... A Little Known Program with a Huge Benefit Do you, or someone you know, live alone and have little contact with people? If the answer is yes, then the "Council on Aging Telephone Reassurance Program" might be for you. This program is especially for seniors age 60 and above that would like for someone to make phone contact with them Monday through Friday. On these days, a volunteer will call to make sure that you are up and okay. If the volunteer does not get an answer, they will notify a contact person that will come check on you. If you are interested in this program, or would like to be a volunteer to make calls with the Telephone Reassurance Program, please call The Neal Senior Center 704-482-3488. Telephone Reassurance 24 28 Wish List for the Neal Senior Center It takes a lot of manpower and materials to operate a business. This is true of any company, big or small. The Neal Senior Center relies on its volunteers and donations in order to provide the many services it does. The center is very grateful to those who have provided time, money, item donations and services to keep the Neal Senior Center in operation. The center is very sincere when they say, "We couldn't do it without you!" Without the giving attitude of its supporters, the Neal Senior Center could not function. The center has a list of items that are especially needed. If you would like to contribute these items to the center, you may bring the items Monday-Thursday from 8AM-5PM and on Friday from 8AM-1PM. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Daniel Dedmon at 704/482-3488. -Prizes for Daytime Bingo -Office Supplies -Paper Products (for the Senior Center Food Pantry) -Hand Sanitizers -Small bottles of dishwashing detergent -Clorox wipes (for the Senior Center Food Pantry) -Personal sized toiletry items, such as soap and shampoo (for the Senior Center Food Pantry) -Arts and Crafts for seniors (construction paper, fabric pieces, crayons, artist paint, etc.) -Any cash donations -Coffee Cups Personal Service.
