PAGE 3 The DelTa Chi eDuCaTional FounDaTion S upporting Delta Chi through your estate plans could be one of the greatest things you can do to change brothers' lives for years to come. The size of your gift does not matter. What's important is knowing you have left a meaningful legacy to the organization that has been so important in your life. Delta Chi's Heritage Society recognizes and honors anyone who names The Delta Chi Educational Foundation as a beneficiary of a will, trust, retirement plan, life insurance policy, life income gift, or other type of accepted planned giving arrangement. Whether you want to eliminate taxes or benefit from an increased income stream, there is a gift to fit every objective. All planned gift donors are eligible to become members of the Heritage Society, as long as their planned gifts are in place. The gift amount is not a factor and does not have to be disclosed. Heritage Society members may also choose to remain anonymous. By naming The Delta Chi Educational Foundation as a beneficiary in your estate planning, you are ensuring the continued growth of Delta Chi. Legacy gifts make a rich fraternal experience possible for future generations of Delta Chis, and they are invaluable in ensuring the long-term viability and financial stability of the Foundation. If you have named The Delta Chi Educational Foundation in your will, trust, or insurance policy, please contact the Foundation at (319) 337-4811 or e-mail the staff at fdnstaff@dcef.com so that we may verify your intentions and include you in future listings. For more information regarding a planned gift to the Foundation, as well as a list of all Heritage Society members, please visit deltachi.org/dcef-planned-giving. LEAVING A LEGACY A s a young alumnus, John Shelby, Sacramento '86, looked up to the icons of Delta Chi and members of the Order of the White Carnation. He admired countless brothers like Nick Gray, Missouri '56, Joe Lacchia, Michigan State '64, and Doc Underwood, Kansas '51, and is honored today to be part of their group. "As a result of giving over the years, I've received recognition for the various levels, but the greatest honor was being recognized by Delta Chi's Order of the White Carnation," he said. "I can only hope that someday I can be as much of an icon as these gentlemen were to me." John acknowledges the wonderful work the Foundation does and believes the more dollars it has the bigger the impact. John understands a fair amount of the donations to the Foundation are restricted, and he wanted to give unrestricted dollars that could help all around, as well as his restricted dollars donated through the Ray Galbreth Fund. John's designated Heritage Society gift is a percentage of his estate, and the amount will depend on the value of his real estate and stock and bond portfolio. "My love for Delta Chi influenced my decision to donate," he said. "If I have the money, why not?" Joining Delta Chi allowed John the opportunity to grow out of his shell and gave him the confidence he needed to become a leader in his community, career, and fraternity. Over the years, he's had the opportunity to sit on many boards, from professional organizations and youth sports to civic and charitable organizations. On each board he's able to tell which members were a part of Greek life in college. "Being a member of a Greek organization really does help you develop and hone your personal and professional skills," he said. "Many of my brothers have gone on to become very successful, and I believe the Fraternity had a lot to do with that. I can point to many fraternal experiences that helped shape my success both personally and professionally." John has been in finance for close to 30 years. He spent time on the Delta Chi staff before moving back to Sacramento, California, to begin his career as a financial planner for IDS American Express. That experience evolved into banking, where he has been for the last 25 years. John and his wife, Erin, have been married for 25 years and have two children, Carly and Matt, Alabama '20.
