5 www.texaspikes.com B iannually the International Pike Fraternity hosts e Academy in Memphis as part of its Pike University leadership training for undergraduates. e Beta Mu Chapter delegation attend- ing the July 2017 academy consisted of SMC Zack Wagner '14, Angus Brooks '16 and Matt Stewart '17, joining more than 500 undergradu- ate Pikes from around the U.S. and Canada. Beta Mu received numerous recognition awards at the conference, in- cluding—for the fourth successive year—the Raymond L. Orians Ex- cellence Award, granted to the top 20 percent of chapters for excellent overall operations. e chapter received the Scholarship Award rec- ognizing overall GPA of 3.2 for the 8th successive year, as well as the Recruitment Level 2 Award. Our alumni advisory board was named, for the fourth successive year, Alumni Board of the Year, granted to only 17 boards this year. Zack said, "Beta Mu has been participating in Pike University events now for a decade. We are a high-performing chapter but there is al- ways room for improvement. We try to send several younger, newer members each year to learn about the national fraternity, to fully embrace Pike's brotherhood, and see best practices from other chapters. We greatly appreciate the Alumni Fund's travel support providing the opportunity for our men to attend these conferences. Texas Pikes are very proud of the awards we brought back to Austin." In July 2018, Pike hosts its 150th Anniversary Convention in Richmond, Virginia, near the fraternity's founding site at the University of Virginia. Pike International CEO Justin Buck, Southeast Missouri State '96, greeted the Beta Mu delegation of Zack Wagner '14, Angus Brooks '16 and Matthew Stewart '17 at e Academy. Beta Mu Chapter reCognized at SuMMer 2017 national pike ConferenCe T exas Pike congratulates its 2016-17 graduates and welcomes them as Pike alumni and Texas Exes! Nine members of the fraternity graduated in December 2016, joined by another 20 in May 2017. e recent graduates included a number of officers and leaders, including several Texas Cowboys and Silver Spurs. Best wishes to these young men as they leave e 40 Acres and begin graduate schools and careers. Several of the graduates are profiled here. Ross Crutchfield '13: Ross graduated in May 2017 with a BBA in finance from the McCombs School. Ross is from Mansfield and served Pike as risk management chairman. Ross has joined the University of Texas Investment Management Co., an external investment company managing investments for the UT and Texas A&M Systems, as an investment analyst based in Austin. His father, also named Ross, was a Pike at Baylor University in the 1980s, and Ross' younger brother, Alex '15, is a Beta Mu Pike entering his junior year at UT. E-mail: rosscrutch@gmail.com Eric DeVelasco '13: Eric earned a BBA in corporate finance with an accounting minor in May 2017. Eric was Beta Mu's treasurer and active on several Pike committees. He is employed with the Zieben Group in Houston, a firm engaged in real estate development and investments, which is headed by Lee Zieben '95, a member of Beta Mu's Alumni Advisory Board. Eric, who is from Houston, interned several summers with the Zieben Group through the Beta Mu alumni's Hire-a-Pike program. E-mail: edevelasco3@gmail.com Sterling Hackley '13: Sterling earned a B.S. in computer science in May 2017. From Arlington, Sterling will be joining Snapchat as an engineer in Venice Beach, Calif. Sterling served on Pike's Academic Committee. His younger brother, Landon '16, is a Beta Mu Pike entering his sophomore year at UT. While at Pike Nick served as a pledge educator and rush captain. He was a member of Texas Cowboys. Nick, from Dallas, has returned to his hometown and joined PwC as an assurance associate. Aer an elongated Southeast Asia and Australia trip last spring, J.D. is headed to Duke University for law school this month. J.D. served Beta Mu in a number of ways including as vice president and president. J.D. is from Tustin, Calif.
