At one point deputies advised the vehicle had fled to another road, so QPD repositioned to I-10 east of Gold Nugget Rd. but the vehicle got past them while they were repositioning. Ballardo continued towards Busi- ness I-10, also known as Main Street, where the truck was finally stopped and a final exchange of gunfire occurred. The suspect was hit during the exchange of gunfire; Lt Ewald and deputies, immediately began administering advanced life- saving techniques to the suspect. Ballardo was transported to an area hospital where he was pro- nounced deceased. Lt. Ewald said, "All the agencies worked very, very well together." Lt. Ewald said, "We all had roles to play; we could have had innocent civilians injured. All the officers act- ed appropriately with great valor." QPD helped protect the scene and photographed the evidence. Ruiz-Zazueta has been charged with first-degree murder, conspir- acy to commit possession of dan- gerous drugs, conspiracy to possess dangerous drugs for sale, and con- spiracy to commit transportation of a dangerous drug for sale.
