K A N S A S S I G Fall 2017 A P u b l i c a t i o n o f S i g m a C h i F r a t e r n i t y a t t h e U n i v e r s i t y o f K a n s a s W hen Martha "Marty" Lee announced her retirement last spring after 11 years as housemother at 1439 Tennessee, the House Corporation began a search for her replacement. We are pleased to announce that Kathy Kennedy will serve as housemother for the men of Alpha Xi starting this fall semester. Kathy Kennedy is a native of Ames, Iowa, and an alumna of Iowa State University. She became a house director purely by accident. As an alumna of Tri Delta at Iowa State and living in Ames, she offered to fill in temporarily in the mid- 2000s when the Tri Delta house director became seriously ill two weeks before recruitment. As it turned out, the house director was unable to return and Kathy stayed on. She quickly discovered she really enjoyed being involved again with Greek life and with the chapter as house director. Five years flew by and Kathy was recruited away to become the house director at Sigma Phi Epsilon at Iowa State where she spent five wonderful years. However, Tri Delta convinced her to come back once again to assist after their housemother left. When Kathy learned that there were fraternity openings at KU, she decided it was time to consider a move to Lawrence to be closer to her family who lives in Olathe. She was particularly interested in Sigma Chi as she was familiar with them at Iowa State and has three friends who are alumni of the Iowa State chapter. Kathy traveled to Lawrence to visit the chapter house in late May and according to Kathy, "I was thrilled when the position was offered to me." When she was asked why she enjoys being a housemother, Kathy said, "I love the energy the young people have and bring to my life. I love meeting them as freshmen and watching them change and mature in the years they have at college. I love the brotherhood that develops in fraternity life and I love that I have the opportunity to join the Sigma Chi family at KU." The House Corporation will remodel the house director's apartment at the Chapter house in anticipation of Kathy's arrival. Kathy plans to maintain her home in Ames and will return there during holidays and summer break. Please join the House Corporation and the men of Alpha Xi in welcoming Kathy. We look forward to her long tenure as our house director. If you are visiting Lawrence, please stop by 1439 Tennessee and introduce yourself to Mom Kennedy.
