P H I K A P PA TA U 2 P hi Kappa Tau is a fraternity founded on learning, leadership, character and, most importantly, brotherhood. As a sophomore at Mississippi State, this is exactly what Durward Dunn '72 found the Alpha Chi Chapter to be. "At the time, the fit seemed right," he recalled. After 45 years of membership, the brothers he met as an undergraduate remain his longstanding friends. While at Mississippi State, Durward pursued a degree in management. He now manages a family construction company in New Orleans specializing in marine and heavy construction. Alpha Chi's brotherhood brought Durward the "exposure to interaction and leadership" he needed for his career. But it was the moments between classes, tests, and studying that Durward still remembers as an alumnus. He recalls the first ΦKT crawfish boil he attended, dances and the gun club, cow pasture socializing—moments of brotherhood that endured long past college. Now an alumnus, Durward frequently returns to campus. "I have attended two crawfish boils, one on Hwy 82 and the other at the new temporary house," he said. "The active chapter members are almost as smart as we were. Their commitment impressed me." After the announcement of the Embracing Your Alpha Chi Legacy campaign, Durward knew this was his chance to make a difference in the future of Alpha Chi. "My contribution is just a small part of an effort by many to bring back and reestablish a strong presence on campus, and a chance to add direction to a strongly motivated chapter," he shared. By joining the campaign, his donation will help build the new, three-story chapter house vital to Alpha Chi's long-term success. To those yet to join the campaign, Durward encourages you to "look back and then forward to see how you can help offer our great Phi Tau experience to others. It is time to step forward." Durward and his wife of 42 years, Catherine Chiappinelli (a Phi Tau little sister), live in New Orleans. Together they have four children and four grandchildren. When not occupied by business, Durward spends his time watching MSU sports and working on a weekend house in "Starkvegas" with Ross Hamilton '72 and Mike Waggener '72. "Ross, our wives, and I have traveled for the last 5-6 years together," he shares. You can connect with Durward at 3d3@nocoxmail.com.
