SEPTEMBER 6 - 12, 2017 UCW 35 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE Question: Why was Disney's "e Little Mermaid" live special that was supposed to be in October on ABC canceled? —Jeremy Matt Roush: ere are differing reports on whether this projected "live action/ animation hybrid" special is canceled or merely postponed. ABC says the lat- ter, but USA Today suggested it may be unlikely to move forward because of budget constraints. It seems that it may have been too ambitious to schedule an event for early fall that mashes up the animated classic with live musical performances. ere may yet be a hap- pily ever after for this project, but it's too soon to tell. Two quick questions: 1. When and where will NBC show the remaining episodes of "Powerless?" 2. When will BBC America show the final season of "The Musketeers?" — P.R. 1. Only two episodes of "Powerless" were left on the shelf when NBC canned it, and the episode featuring the late Adam West was made available online for a limited time following his death. If NBC didn't make these available on nbc.com for screening, you'll probably have to wait until or if someone picks up the series for streaming. 2. e third sea- son of "e Musketeers" bypassed BBC America for streaming the entire series on Hulu. by Damian Holbrook Jeers to "Bachelor in Paradise" for be- ing an absolute bully. Raise your hand if you've ever felt personally victimized by Robby Hayes's eight-pack while gorging on reality TV's answer to empty calories. Cheers to "e Bold Type" for being a font of fashionable fun. Freeform's soapy tale set at a Cosmo-like magazine has a Devil Wears Prada-ish vibe and the kind of fresh ensemble (including Aisha Dee, Katie Stevens and Meghann Fahy) that never goes out of style. Cheers to Shay Mitchell for booking a hot new gig. Having conquered the YA scene, the "Pretty Little Liars" vet is mov- ing into the adult mystery section with a role in "You," Lifetime's in-production adaptation of Caroline Kepnes's juicy novel about a bookstore clerk (Penn Badgley) with a killer crush. at is some A-plus casting. NEWS OF THE WEIRD by CHUCK SHEPPARD People Different From Us In a shocking display of mischief, an unnamed 60-year-old man in Singapore is under investigation for lodging three toothpicks in a seat on a public bus in July. If he is found to be the culprit, he could spend up to two years in prison. Singapore has an extremely low crime rate, and even minor offenses result in harsh punishments. For example, vandalism is punishable by caning. Police said at press time that the investigation was continuing. [Reuters, 8/8/2017] Wait, What? Practicing physicians in Cairo, Egypt, opened a surgery-themed restaurant called D.Kebda in July, where they wear surgical scrubs and prepare their only offering, grilled beef-liver sandwiches, behind a glass partition. Kebda is a popular street food in Egypt, but it can cause food poisoning if not prepared carefully. "We tried to take our career values and apply them to this other field," said Mostafa Basiouny, one of the owners. "There is no contradiction between them; we are still practicing doctors." [Reuters, 8/3/2017] Great Expectations On Aug. 7, 16-year-old Jack Bergeson of Wichita, Kansas, filed papers in Topeka to run for governor as a Democrat in the 2018 race. Bergeson, who won't be able to vote in that election, said: "I thought, you know, let's give the people of Kansas a chance. Let's try something new." The candidate says he would "radically change" health care and would support legalizing medical marijuana, but he's conservative on gun rights. Bryan Caskey, director of elections at the Kansas secretary of state's office, said there is no law governing the qualifications for governor. Bergeson's running mate, 17-year-old Alexander Cline, will be 18 by the election and will get to vote. [ABC News, 8/13/2017] Animal Antics A skunk got up close and personal with a 13-year-old boy on July 25 when it climbed into his bed in Hamden, Connecticut, apparently after hitchhiking into the house in a trash can. The family was able to remove the skunk without the help of the Hamden Animal Control Division, but an officer said the "smell of skunk ... emanated throughout the house."
