AUGUST 23 - 29, 2017 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE Question: What is your reaction to the upcoming season being the last for ABC's "e Middle?" It has been so consistent for a show this long running: warm and quirky and funny and relatable. I'll miss it — but what a really good run it has had! It's a shame that apart from you it didn't get a lot of critical buzz, or Emmy nominations for the show, the writing or the amazing cast. And especially more of a shame that Eden Sher never got any awards love for Sue. Maybe she'll get a yearbook signed by everybody. — ML Matt Roush: I know I'd sign that. My feel- ings about this are bittersweet, as they always are when a show I've treasured comes to its natural end, which I do believe is the case with "e Middle," heading into a pre-conceived (by its cre- ators) farewell season. I look forward to seeing the Hecks go out with dignity next spring, but I am sorry the show rarely got the respect critically, and certainly from the industry, that it deserved for shining a light on a funny family in middle Amer- ica struggling with good humor to make ends meet as so many American families do. It's an underappreciated classic, and much as I'll miss it, I'm at peace with nine seasons of great comedy. (Interest- ing to note that Patricia Heaton's last comedy classic, "Everybody Loves Ray- mond," also went out after nine seasons with the creative energy still strong.) by Damian Holbrook Cheers to Luann D'Agostino for cut- ting her marriage storyline short. Even though nutso naysayer Ramona gets to be right about her "Real Housewives of New York City" costar's future ex-hubby Tom, we're glad that the former count- ess has come to her senses and sent the player packing. Jeers to "Candy Crush" for being full of app. Just because we love the game on our phones doesn't mean that even lik- able host Mario Lopez can juice up this overblown oddity featuring players on wires attacking a giant screen. at's not how any of this works. Cheers to "Love Connection" for warm- ing our hearts. Andy Cohen's reboot of the '80s hookup factory took a break from its usual booty-and-the-beasts roster for a sweetly sassy segment that helped 75-year-old Jim Moroney get back in the game after his granddaugh- ter tweeted that he'd been stood up by a blind date. NEWS OF THE WEIRD by CHUCK SHEPPARD Bright Ideas Alana Nicole Donahue, 27, of Springfield, Oregon, just wanted to entertain her children and nephew with a joy ride around the neighborhood. But on July 12, as she pulled the kids (ages 2, 4 and 8) behind her Ford Taurus in a plastic red wagon, she was arrested for reckless endangerment. Donahue told police she was just "showing the kids a good time." However, horrified witnesses saw the car going about 30 mph as the wagon went up on two wheels going around a busy traffic circle at rush hour. [The Oregonian, 7/15/2017] Technology Run Amok A security robot named Steve suffered a soggy fatal error on July 17 when it tumbled down several steps and into a fountain in Washington, D.C. New to the job, the robot had been patrolling the Washington Harbour area of Georgetown, mapping out its features in an effort to prevent just such an accident. "He looked so happy and healthy," an area mourner tweeted after the incident. Another observer was less sympathetic. "Robots: 0; humans: 1," he tweeted. [CBS Philly, 7/19/2017] Least Competent Criminals • The Pink Panther, he ain't. Police in Wayne County, North Carolina, are looking for a careless cat burglar who keeps waking people up as he robs them. At least one victim awakened by the slender white man in early July has seen him wearing a pink polka-dot beach towel around his head. Police aren't sure if he's actually gotten away with any loot. [The Charlotte News & Observer, 7/3/2017] •Three heads are apparently not better than one, as three China Grove, North Carolina, masterminds demonstrated on July 12. Rex Allen Farmer, his son, Rex Carlo Farmer, and the younger man's girlfriend, Kayla Nicole Price, cooked up a scheme to rob the Mooresville gas station where the elder Farmer worked. Surveillance video showed Carlo, disguised in a woman's dress and wig, emptying the cash register as his father, the clerk on duty, stood by. Carlo then ran outside and removed the dress and wig, setting them on fire next to the building. However, the fire spread to a meter on the building and a privacy fence, thus summoning authorities. Police soon caught up to all three and arrested them.
