Master the art of substitution. "Breaking bad habits is difficult. It's easier to replace habits," Roizen says. Examples? Replace the after- dinner cigarette with a walk. Sub the second glass of wine with a piece of dark chocolate. In the financial realm, replace old financial priorities with smarter ones: Boost that emergency fund instead of your shoe collection. Work with a Team. DIY works, until it doesn't. "Although your medical situation and finances are private, you can't do it solo," Roizen says. So get the annual physical. Meet with a financial planner you trust — if not annually, during key life transitions. There's strength in collaboration. In fact, 83 percent of patients who get a full work-up for the first time at Cleveland Clinic follow action plans that result in positive health outcomes within a year. Get enough sleep and manage stress. "If you're not getting enough sleep, you're not performing well," Chatzky says. "You're not making the best decisions because your focus isn't there." When it comes to work-life balance, there are different norms for different people and generations, but Roizen says the key thing is to manage stress. To that end, Chatzky and Roizen allow for ways to enjoy good food, good times and the good life. Having health and wealth isn't about austerity and self-denial. They even encourage readers to invest in their home, making it a haven where you can de-stress. A place to enjoy your prosperity for as long as you live. AACreditUnion.org | | 15 Automate smart decisions. Making wise money and health choices is easier if you can empathize with the future you, say Roizen and Chatzky, but they admit that's hard to do. "Our future self is a stranger to us," Chatzky says. So automate. Schedule 401(k) contributions, bill payments. Plan to eat the same healthy breakfast and lunch often. "Automating helps immeasurably," Chatzky says. "It allows you to make the good decision one time and make it over and over again without thinking about it."
