A cataract is a cloudy lens in your eye. It is like having a dirty windshield on your car. Even if you change your glasses, your vision is still going to be blurred until you wash your windshield. Cataracts are painless, but they can have a profoundly negative impact on vision thereby sig- nificantly reducing your quality of life. Is Cataract surgery considered a safe surgery? Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed sur- gery in the U.S. It's an outpatient procedure, and literally only takes a few minutes to complete in the hands of a skilled cataract surgeon. When utilizing cutting edge tech- nology, both safety and efficacy exceed 99 percent in most clinical studies. How do you know when it's time to seek treatment for cataracts? When a patient loses their ability to read, drive or carry out other normal activities of daily living, we encourage patients to undergo an ophthalmic evaluation. With the amazing safety and efficacy of lens extraction, patients now are electing to proceed with cataract surgery much earlier than in the past. What's important to consider when selecting a cataract surgeon? Pick a surgeon who is proven, and pick a center that has invested in the state-of-the-art technology. Eye sight is a precious thing, and you want to make sure you are put- ting your trust in the right team. We also are a big believer in being the type of center that genuinely puts patient care first. As the old saying goes, no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care. You have invested a great deal in technology. Tell us about it? We offer both manual and custom laser cataract sur- gery. While manual cataract surgery certainly is still effec- tive, customized femtosecond laser cataract surgery takes this procedure to an entirely new level. With this advanced technology, we are now achieving 20/20 or better vision in greater than 90 percent of our patients. Furthermore, we can now not only provide great distance vision, we are also able to provide patients improved intermediate (computer screen) and near (reading) vision without glasses correction. Laser cataract surgery not only offers improved precision in refractive outcomes, but also offers enhanced patient safety in many cases. I am so proud of my team to say that we were the first in Arkansas to offer custom laser cataract correction and are currently the only center in the state to offer 3D cat- aract surgery, which we believe enhances surgical out- comes. In addition, we offer more customized intraocular lens options than almost any center in the United States, and are part of FDA-approved clinical trials with many new technologies in the fields of cataract, glaucoma and refractive surgery. Can you tell us a little about the technology of interop- erative abberometry (ORA) that Vold Vision offers? During the patient's initial in-office exam, our optical technician will perform eye measurements to allow us to place the perfect customized lens during surgery. The ac- curacy of these test play a key part in the patient's visu- al outcome. The challenge these measurements are done through the patient's cloudy cataract lens. This is where the ORA System Technology plays a significant role. This sophisticated technology can easily measure the vision correction accuracy during surgery and after the cataract has been removed. Having that information during the procedure makes it possible to fine-tune surgical adjust- ments and achieve results that exceed previously achiev- able optimal vision for the patient. Special to NWa Democrat-Gazette Dr. Steven volD, M.D. M.D.
