As we age, our abilities to understand a speaking person gets more frustrating. At the same time, many older adults are reluctant to admit they have a hearing problem and some simply deny it. An informational seminar on "Hearing Loss and Healthcare' will be presented by Cynthia Harmon, Hard of Hearing Services Specialist with the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing on Friday, May 26, 2017 beginning at 9:00 AM at the Neal Senior Center. The seminar is divided into two sessions. The first session covers the impact of hearing loss and how to communicate going forward. The second session will cover technology and other communication tools. Assistive listening devices and ASL interpreters will be available. An RSVP is required and carpooling is encour- aged. Other accommodations for communication must be requested at least two weeks in advance. For further infor- mation, or to RSVP for one or both sessions, please call Cynthia Harmon 828-430-7185, ext. 107. Do you, or someone you know, live alone and have little contact with people? If the answer is yes, then the "Council on Aging Telephone Reassurance Program" might be for you. This program is especially for seniors age 60 and above that would like for someone to make phone contact with them Monday through Friday. On these days, a volunteer will call to make sure that you are up and okay. If the volunteer does not get an answer, they will notify a contact person that will come check on you. If you are interested in this program, or would like to be a volunteer to make calls with the Telephone Reassurance Program please call The Neal Senior Center 704-482-3488. You may have had exposure to a foreign language in school, but you may have forgotten most of what you were taught! Or, it could be that you weren't interested in learning a language at that time. Regardless of the situation, here's your chance to begin to learn a foreign language! The Neal Senior Center is offering "Spanish for Beginners", beginning Thursday, June 1st, from 10-11AM, meeting every week going through August 31st. If you know something about the Spanish language, this would be an excellent refresher course in speaking and spelling. Even if you're a beginner to any foreign language, this would be simple way to learn some of the basic skills in reading, writing and speaking Spanish. The class will include basic letter pronunciation, words, phrases and even conversation. You would be able to learn the basics of dialogue, such as when you go to the doctor, to a restaurant, or go shopping. The class would even discuss culture of the Spanish-speaking world, includ- ing customs and ways of life. To pre-register, contact the Neal Senior Center at 704/482-3488 and provide your contact information. The class is free of charge and each participant would need to bring paper and pencil.
