4120 Clinton Parkway Lawrence, KS 66047 Address Service Requested A PUBLICATION FOR ALUMNI, PARENTS, AND FRIENDS OF BISHOP SEABURY ACADEMY Bishop Seabury A C A D E M Y pro tip: how to navigate college applications from a college counselor By: Matt Patterson H aving spent more than a decade as a college counselor at Bishop Seabury, I can honestly say that I am proud of the success our students have achieved over the years in securing positive college outcomes. Here are a few of the principles that guide me as I guide students through the college planning process. Students who plan well will always find good options. College admissions can be very unpredictable, of course. And, yes, a handful of colleges do have admit rates as low as 5%. But there is a great range of colleges that are very eager to have our students take a four-year tour of their campuses. Many of them are willing to go to great lengths to make sure that our students can afford to attend—because they know that our students will be successful on their campuses. Students usually earn the best results when they seek to create options at a number of col- leges rather than focus all of their energy on a single college. No one single college is superior to all others. Students greatly enhance their potential not only for admissions offers but also for scholarship offers by applying to multiple colleges. Students need to own this process themselves. Colleges are not accepting a student's parents, nor are they accepting me. I don't mind telling students exactly what to do, but they need to be the ones to do it. In the last week, I've had admissions officers at two separate colleges compliment me on how independent our students were in contacting admissions by themselves. Doing so makes a great impression and affects admissions and scholarship decisions. Students need to prioritize their mental and physical well-being over everything else. The col- lege application process can be very stressful, and it entails a great degree of effort on the student's part. That said, students need to take a few deep breaths now and then and remember that, as long as they do their job, all will turn out well. to talk to the students during morning meeting about what Seabury was like for them and what path they followed to get where they are now. The alumni then have an informal sit-down with the seniors to talk specifically about college and career advice. This has been a great way to get students thinking about life after high school and we've even been able to connect some seniors directly with alumni who attended colleges in which they are interested. Our most recent alumnus speaker was Jenn Crawford Malloy '07. The students loved hearing about her pathway to Creighton University (where she got a B.S. in chemistry and a B.S. in German) and beyond. Jenn went on to the Creighton University School of Dentistry and she is now a general dentist in the Air Force stationed in Misawa, Japan, with her husband and daughter.
