2 Boys' Varsity Basketball Captures Third at State By: Hilary Griggs '19 "T his is the craziest day ever!" shouted Oona Nelson '23 from the front row of seats at K-State's Bramlage Coliseum during the second round of the 2A state basketball tournament. And though it sounds like an exaggeration, she may have been right. After winning sub-state for the second year in a row and defeating Ness City in what Zach McDermott '18 called a "key win for the team," the Seahawks were engaged in a tough battle against St. John-Hudson High School. In a record-breaking six overtimes, in which athletic director Eric Nelson said he had a "huge knot in my stomach the entire time," the Seahawks battled hard. But a last-minute half-court shot, which was later featured on ESPN SportsCenter, cost the Seahawks the game. "Losing like that was one of the worst feelings I have ever felt," said Thomas diZerega '18. But even after the difficult loss, the Seahawks rebounded to take the third place title in their 68-56 victory against Hoxie the next day. "We were definitely not looking forward to playing on Saturday," said diZerega. "But once we got on the court we had to put [the loss] out of our minds." Other highlights from the Seahawks' incredible season were individual awards for Mikey Wycoff '17 and head coach Ashley Battles. In his final season as a Seahawk, Wycoff was awarded 2A Player of the Year, and Battles, in his last year coaching the varsity basketball team, was named the 2A Coach of the Year. Though the St. Johns game will not go down in the Seabury history books as a happy moment, it was just one part of the most successful season and the most successful team in Seabury basketball history. This year was truly what Nelson called an "unbelievable experience." S O LI D ST A TE BSA faculty member Christopher Bryan cheering on the Seahawks. Mikey Wycoff '17 named Kansas 2A player of the year!
