Severalstudentswere recognized recently by the Red Bluff Elk's Lodge as the Students of the Month for April. The students were selected by teachers from their respective schools in Te- hama County and awarded certificates for their outstanding scholastic per- formance, demonstrated leadership and overall high personal character. The students shared with all in attendance their accomplishments, future educational plans and their career goals. The Red Bluff Elks Lodge takes great pleasure in recognizing these out- standing young people and appreciates the tremen- dous support given them by their schools, families and the community. High school students recognized included Kirstie Barr, Trinity Kingwell, Aaron Hardy, Taylor Nguyen, Hailey Sullivan and Aurrorah Aguilar. Renowned Vietnam- ese-American author An- drew Lam will be speak- ing on immigrant writing at Chico State 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday, April 27, when he will read from his up- coming book, "Stories from the Edge of the Sea: Immi- grant Writing and Voice in the 21st Century." Lam is a recipient of the PEN Open Book award, is a frequent con- tributor to NPR's pro- gram All Things Consid- ered and writes for the Huffington Post. He is an editor at New America Media and has published two other books of essays — "Perfume Dreams: Re- flections on the Vietnam- ese Diaspora" and "East Eats West: Writing in Two Hemispheres," as well as a collection of short stories, "Birds of Paradise Lost." The presentation will be held in Colusa Hall 100A and is free and open to the public. CHICO STATE Immigrantwritingistopicofreading Gerber SERRF staff per- son Gabrielle German im- plements varied stretches with students as a warm- up activity as a practice for GO FAR, stands for Go Out For A Run, and is an annual SERRF Expanded Learning Program event held each May. It allows students the opportunity to take part in a 10-week fitness program to learn about healthy eating habits and how to train for a 5K run. The goal of the event is to help reduce childhood obesity by educating the students of the benefits of being active and living a healthy lifestyle.
