CONTRIBUTED Sgt. Pat Hurton and Pastor John Bohrer stand together following the March 19 worship service where the New Life Baptist Church celebrated all members of the Tehama County Law Enforcement Community. Hurton, of the California Highway Pa- trol, was the featured speaker for the morning. Following the service a potluck lunch was enjoyed by all. Celebrate the Blue Sunday was to honor and show appreciation for those who work to keep the community safe. NEWLIFEBAPTIST CHURCH HOLDS CELEBRATE THE BLUE SUNDAY EVENT Ifinditveryrefresh- ing, especially in today's world, to meditate upon the good- ness of God! It's so easy to become caught in the web of listening to all the bad and evil tak- ing place around us. But, on the light side, let's cherish the beauty of God's sunshine available to our heart and soul. Jesus is the light of the world! In John 8:12 Je- sus stated, "I am the light of the world. He who fol- lows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life." In Co- lossians 1:13 we see what God says on this subject: "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love." This month we can cel- ebrate Easter, but bet- ter yet, let's celebrate Eas- ter every day! I began to celebrate the true mean- ing of Easter in 1963. That wasn't the time I joined any particular denomina- tion, but it was the year that I was born into the family of God, and I've celebrated the resurrec- tion of Jesus every day of my life since then. "Now therefore, you are no lon- ger strangers and foreign- ers, but fellow citizens with the saints and mem- bers of the household of God" (Ephesians 2:19). When Jesus died upon that cruel cross for the re- mission of our sins, He didn't remain there! Yes, He was crucified but rose again the third day. "He is not here, but is risen! Re- member how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, 'The Son of Man, must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again' "(Luke 24:6-7). When the Lord was speaking with Martha, af- ter her brother had died, He asked her a question each one of us needs to answer. Scripture has re- corded what Jesus stated about himself, found in John 11:24-25. "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you be- lieve this?" In Matthew 16:13-17 Je- sus asks his disciples a question. " But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered and said, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Je- sus answered and said to him, ' Blessed are you, Si- mon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not re- vealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.' " Who is Jesus to me and to you? When we believe He is Christ, the Son of the living God, and that He is the resurrection and the life, we have reason to be filled with hope, faith and victory. When our heart rests in the knowl- edge that we are cruci- fied with Christ and risen with Christ, our life will be anchored in faith. "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Gala- tians 2:20). When we take the em- phasis off ourselves and understand that we can, as believers, live by faith in the Son of God we can continually look to Jesus to see us through every trial in life. Why? Because Scripture tells us that He holds all things together! That knowledge provides resurrection faith and living. "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invis- ible, whether thrones or dominions or principali- ties or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist." (Colossians 1:16-17) We can celebrate Easter knowing that our personal sins can be forgiven when we willingly receive His gift of eternal life. When we see our own sins, our need to repent and turn away from them, and we receive the free gift of for- giveness, choose to follow Jesus with real commit- ment, we will pass from death unto life. We are given the gift of eternal life, through Jesus Christ, whom we have chosen to be our Savior and Lord. "But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who be- lieve in His name; who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God" John 1:12-13. Amysterious carving of a woman's face has been discovered at the church where John F. Ken- nedyandJacquelineBouvier married in 1953, the church announced Wednesday. St.Mary's ChurchinNew- port is being restored. The carving was discovered re- cently when a large organ was dismantled, revealing decorative columns, said the Rev. Kris von Maluski. Maluski believes it's Mary Magdalene. Her face is split between two columns that face each other, forming a line with carvings of the 12 apostles in the choir loft. "She has got to be signif- icant to be on that level," he said. "But the organ was so massive, she was lost for a very long time." The carving dates back more than 160 years to when the church was built. Maluski is contacting churches also designed by architect Patrick Keely at that time to see if they have a similar carving and know its identity. The church is restoring the organ and replacing the casework and pipes with parts that fit into the space and match the Gothic style of the church.
