RESOURCES Veterans services, advocacy groups Internal Revenue Service Taxpayers who have not yet received their income tax refunds can use "Where's My Refund?" app to check the status. Find it on IRS.gov or the free IRS mobile app IRS2Go. Here are five tips to know about "Where's My Refund?" 1. SOME REFUNDS DELAYED Beginning in 2017, certain taxpayers will get their re- funds later. By law, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for any tax re- turn claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit or Addi- tional Child Tax Credit. The IRS must hold the entire re- fund, notjustthepartrelated totheEITCorACTC.TheIRS beganreleasingdelayed2016 EITC and ACTC refunds on February 15. These refunds likely won't arrive in bank accounts or on debit cards until the week ofFebruary27.Thisistrueas long as there are no process- ingissueswiththetaxreturn andthetaxpayerchosedirect deposit. Banking and finan- cialsystemsneedtimetopro- cessdeposits, whichcantake several days. Where's My Refund? will be updated on February 18 for the vast majority of early filers who claimed the EarnedIncomeTaxCreditor Additional Child Tax Credit. BeforeFebruary18,sometax- payers may see a projected date or a message that indi- cates the IRS is processing their return. "Where's My Refund?" remains the best way to check the status of a refund. 2. TIMELY ACCESS Informa- tion will normally be avail- ablewithin24hoursafterthe IRS receives the taxpayer's e- filedreturn, orfourweeksfor a paper return. The system updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight, so there is no need to check more often. 3. GATHER BASIC INFORMA- TION Taxpayersshouldhave theirSocialSecuritynumber, filingstatusandexactrefund amountwhenusing"Where's My Refund?". Those without Internet access can call 800- 829-1954 anytime, to access the audio version of this tool. 4. WHAT TO EXPECT "Where's My Refund?" in- cludes a tracker that dis- plays progress through three stages: Return Received, Re- fund Approved and Refund Sent. When the IRS pro- cesses a tax return and ap- proves the refund, taxpayers can see their expected re- fund date. Even though the IRS issues most refunds in less than 21 days, tax returns mayneedfurtherreviewand take longer. 5.WHENTOCALL Taxpayers should call the IRS to check on a refund only when it has been 21 days or more since they e-filed, more than six weeks since the return was mailed, the "Where's My Re- fund?" tool directs them to contact IRS. A tax transcript will not help taxpayers find out when they will get their re- fund. The IRS notes that the information on a transcript does not necessarily reflect the amount or timing of a refund. While taxpayers can use a transcript to validate past income and tax filing status for mortgage, student and small business loan ap- plications, and to help with tax preparation they should use"Where'sMyRefund?"to check the status of their re- fund. All taxpayers should keep a copy of their tax re- turn. Beginning in 2017, tax- payersusingasoftwareprod- uct for the first time may need their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) amount from their prior-year tax return to verify their identity. SHASTA COLLEGE Gender equity conference scheduled Staff Report A Twain and a McClain will make appearances at the State Theatre in Red Bluff next weekend in back-to-back benefit events for the Red Bluff Spartan Sports Boosters. Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours are local favorites. Mc- Clain lives in Nashville, but he rounds up the Trouba- dours for frequent visits to Red Bluff and the rest of the north state. He turns each stop into the fictional Pine View Heights Trailer Park, with pink flamingoes and all, and songs steeped in hu- mor and rich storytelling. McClain is best known locally for his appearances at Woodflock, when "fla- mingoheads" take over the Red Bluff Recreation Area on the Sacramento River on Memorial Day Weekend for music, camping and fun. For those who can't wait, McClain and the Trouba- dours will play a show at the State Theatre starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31. It's part of the band's 10th anniversary celebra- tion. Tickets are $25. The next night — fit- tingly, April Fools Day — the theater will be visited by the ghost of Mark Twain. It was Twain who wrote: "All Fools' Day: This is the day upon which we are re- minded of what we are on the other three hundred and sixty-four." Impressionist McAvoy Layne will bring Twain to life in a show that starts at 7:30. Tickets are $18 in ad- vance or $20 at the door. Tickets for each event can be purchased online at statetheatreredbluff.com. They can also be purchased in advance at the Tehama Country Visitor Center, 250 Antelope Boulevard in Red Bluff.
