University of Kansas page 3 CHOOSING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Fred Schaeffer '82 Joins the Gamma Tau: The Next 100 Years Campaign C oming from a small community, Fred Schaeffer '82 was searching for a Fraternity that would provide him instant friendships and both social and academic support to help the transition into a larger community. Gamma Tau offered him everything he was looking for in a Fraternity, exceeding all of his expectations and becoming "a place of lifelong friendships, brotherhood, and opportunity for philanthropy and giving back." Since his time in the Fraternity, Fred has chosen to give back to Gamma Tau through the many volunteer opportunities the chapter provides its alumni. Fred made a donation to the Gamma Tau: The Next 100 Years campaign to give back to Delta Tau Delta, which has given him so much. "My hope is that through the many contributions of all alumni, we can collectively ensure the financial future of Gamma Tau by paying down— and hopefully eliminating—the mortgage, as well as providing the much- needed working capital to update the house and ensure the Shelter remains a world-class Fraternity for current and future Brothers," Fred said. When considering getting involved with the campaign, Fred reminds his Brothers, "Getting involved can be as simple as writing a check or volunteering any time you may have to the Shelter or house corporation." There were three pivotal moments in Fred's membership, which pushed him to take the step in getting involved with the campaign: an early capital campaign led by Jim Benson '82; when the Gamma Tau Shelter was occupied by another Fraternity; and when he was last at the Shelter for the Gamma Tau centennial weekend in November 2012. The Gamma Tau centennial had a profound impact on Fred, leaving him a proud alumnus and ready to make a difference in the lives of his undergraduate Brothers. Fred Schaeffer '82 on his post-retirement month-long motorcycle trip through Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. "Many Brothers had come in from around the U.S. and the world for the centennial. I had flown from Singapore to celebrate at the Shelter," Fred said, "It was fabulous to see the commitment of the young men who had recently returned the property at 1111 W. 11th Street." After spending 32 years working in the food business with companies such as Kraft Foods and McCain Foods, Fred decided to retire. His career allowed him to travel the nation and the world, from Kansas to eastern Asia, and many of the leadership skills he utilized in his career began with Delta Tau Delta, proving the Fraternity is always a part of you. Fred and his wife of 31 years, Keri, live in Toronto, Canada. In his free time, Fred and his family enjoy traveling, and he recently returned from a month of motorcycle riding in Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. It was a well-attended event, and we were proud to raise funds for the Junior Diabetes Research Fund. In November, we also held Dad's Weekend. This weekend is always one of our favorites as we enjoy the camaraderie that exists between us Brothers and our dads. Maintaining Alumni Relationships We look forward to building on our successes from last fall with an emphasis on academic excellence and maintaining strong alumni relationships. We have created a Facebook group with alumni and current members of the house, and we would love to see you at the Shelter!
