Delta Chi a Consistent Touch Point for Major Travis Covey, New Mexico State '03 I t was in learning the 100-year history of Delta Chi that Travis Covey, New Mexico State '03, began to find his place in the fraternity. Travis' father, who served in the Marine Corps for 20 years (an alumni initiate himself), had instilled in him a deep sense of appreciation for history, and the sense of commitment inherent to Delta Chi deeply appealed to Travis. "Who I've become is due in large part to three institutions—my family, the Marine Corps, and Delta Chi. Delta Chi instilled character and values and provided standards that needed to be met. I believe that anything that's worthwhile takes work and dedication—Delta Chi has been nothing less." Travis knows about work and dedication. As an undergraduate, he earned bachelor's degrees in government and criminal justice, and also completed the United States Marine Corps, Officer Candidate School. He accepted a commission as a Second Lieutenant and attended law school at Oklahoma City University, School of Law and upon graduation, moved on to The Basic School and the Naval Justice School, earning the title of Judge Advocate. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton for two years and in 2010 deployed to Afghanistan for a year. When he returned, Travis was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C., for three years. He then went back to school to earn his Master of Laws degree in International and Operational law. In that time, he and his wife, Misty, welcomed their two children, Mason and Makenzie. He is now the Staff Judge Advocate for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit and deployed in February aboard the U.S.S. Bataan. At all points of Travis' career, he has remained engaged with Delta Chi, as a member of ABTs at local chapters, as a Vice Regent in Region II, on the Undergraduate and Young Alumni Committee for the Foundation, a t t e n d i n g r e g i o n a l conferences, and as an attendee of nearly every Delta Chi Convention since 2002. "I loved Delta Chi in college and I want to help maintain the organization I was a part of. I've been lucky to have a group of friends from New Mexico State who also remain involved. We constantly push each other to do more. We've each gotten a lot from the Fraternity and there's no limit on what you can do to give back." In that vein, Travis has also chosen to give back to the Delta Chi Educational Foundation as a member of the Trustee Society. He shares, "As an undergraduate, your first exposure to the Foundation is maybe a blurb in the Cornerstone or a mention in an e-mail, but you don't understand the magnitude of what the Foundation does. "At my first Convention, I was really exposed to the Foundation and learned what it offers to the Fraternity and its members. As I was financially able, I chose to give back to support their mission. If you think you've received anything from the Fraternity, you should give back. It takes each of us pulling our own weight to make sure this institution flourishes." It takes each of us pulling our own weight to make sure this institution flourishes.
