Main7pm Concessions Available In a special meeting on Monday, March 13, the La Paz County Board of suspended all hiring and overtime and offering employees voluntary unpaid leave from work. A presentation by Interim La Paz County Administrator Rob- ert Smith and auditor Jay Parke stated, "La Paz County's current fi nancial crisis is a culmination of limited resources to provide man- dated services, striving to maintain the current level of services, reoc- curring annual operating defi cits from Special Revenue Funds, a decline in revenue from housing federal inmates, lack of centralized processes, and signifi cant defi - ciencies in internal controls and fi nancial reporting." At the March 6th Supervisors meeting, Smith said, "It's been building for years. The last four years have been the worst." The county is looking in a defi cit of $10 to $11 million. Supervisors approved a loan to help with pay- roll. Board authorized a team to re- view the fi scal situation, to develop short term and long term action plans, and alternative revenues for the jail. District 2 Supervisor Duce Minor said, "It's been no secret that my focus has been the fi nances. It's not a pretty picture, but we'll get out of it; we're going to have to take some hard steps."
