The National Hon- or Society, Salome High School Student Council, and Future Busi- ness Leaders of America gathered along the U.S. Highway 60 between Salome and Wenden with the pur- pose of removing trash from the community. Geared with gloves, garbage bags, and safety vests, stu- dents removed copious amounts of debris. Not only making the sur- roundings safer for both people and wildlife alike, but also aiding in the goal to keep our community beautiful. This event helps get stu- dents involved and gives them a sense of pride in their community. There's no denying that this year's Highway Clean-up was a success. The Salome High School art show took place from January 31st to February 9th. It was held at the Centennial Community Center in Salome. The first place win- ners were Rhiyanna Timberlake for her melted crayon artwork de- picting a singing girl in a cloud of color and Yesenia Martinez for her stipple drawing of a celebrity. They each received $20. Ezekiel Palma and Ana Valle got second place for Ezekiel's otter canopic jar and Ana's pencil drawing of an eagle. They each received $15. Jade Wil- lett won a third place prize for her zentangle owl, and Karina Vazquez received the other third place prize for her hand-made book. They each received $10. Finally, Zach Hager received an honorable mention for his color pencil drawing centered around the Miami Heat and he received $5. According to Sharon from the community center, the art show was a great success and there were many people who got to see the work. All prize money was provided by the Centennial Com- munity Center. Spring break is coming up, from March 5th through the 11th, and the students of Salome High School are excited to get a little R&R from as- signments and due dates. Although, for some students, this is also their final few weeks with their 4H ani- mals. This means that they have to get everything in order. For exam- ple trailers, food, and water for both the owner and animal. For some of these students, it will be their final year in 4H. Tyler Luz, Lupita Bal- derama, Alondra Mendoza, Sylvia Mendoza, and Thomas Lard will all be graduating this year. It may be hard work but it builds great char- acter and will for sure look good on a college resume. Basketball season has officially ended. With the end of one good thing is the start of another. The Track, Softball, and Baseball sea- sons began on the thirteenth of February. Coach McCarthy says, "I really look forward to the girls going out there and playing really hard and representing, #DoWorkFrogs." McCarthy is the softball Coach this season and is pushing the girls to be proud of their work. The fight- ing frog's Baseball Coach, Zachary Clough said, "I'm hoping the guys learn the game, and throughout the year we constantly improve." Mario and Ryan, of the track team, hope that somebody will break a school record this season. And Julia Slucas, the track coach, stated, "I want ev- eryone to beat their personal best." Yearbook is still selling ads for orga- nizations who are interested in buy- ing one. For a full page it is $150.00, half-page is $90, a quarter page is $70, and a business card sized ad is $50. Trevon Tapp The Quartzsite Museum was opened in 1980 and is officially named the Tyson Well Stage Sta- tion Museum. It is operated by the Quartzsite Historical Society, whose mission is "to conduct itself as an educational non-profit organiza- tion in a fully involved historical program, which shall include mu- seum display, collection of books, maps, other papers and materials illustrative of our described area of interest from 1850 to the present." Since the Mission was adopted in 1983 a small group of local resi- dents and snowbirds have worked to preserve the history and display it for the public. And the public has been responsive! Our displays have changed over the years thanks to the generous contributions of memora- bilia, artifacts and photos. When the Museum was created, our building was an adobe shell, in need of much work. The building had been standing since 1866. Vol- unteers came together and even- tually that shell was encased in an outer wall, which protects the old adobe from the weather and fur- ther decay. More recently the bunk house from the Mariquita Mine was added and a recreation of a sleep- ing room of the Oasis Hotel was completed. A rock village, built by a local resident, was moved to our site, and inside numerous exhibits regarding our pioneers, our mining history and the creation and devel- opment of the Town, showcase our local history. Our exhibits are con- stantly changing and we encour- age visitors to keep returning to see what is new. There is so much to learn about Quartzsite and the sur- rounding desert! Visiting the Museum is free, although donations are always welcome. Lo- cated at 161 W. Main Street (parking in rear). Our winter hours continue through March with the Museum open Wednesday through Sunday 10 to 4. Guided tours are available dur- ing those hours. E-mail QHS@TDS. net. Phone: (928)927-5229. We continue to raise funds by recycling plastic and aluminum, which can be dropped off any time at the front gate collection can. New volunteers are welcome! We are es- pecially seeking someone with web site skills who is willing to volunteer to bring our currently inaccessible web site back. Museum: preserving our history DEADLINE : WED.
