BROTHERS, WE NEED YOUR HELP! Alumni Asked to Step Up, Give Back to Montana Beta A sking for help is difficult for me to do and so is asking for donations, but brothers, we need both to keep the chapter strong. The alumni volunteers, who have guided Montana Beta for the last 13 years, and in some cases longer, need your help. Volunteering doesn't have to be a huge time commitment. It could be as simple as helping with the Homecoming activities or assisting a Chapter Advisor. We will find something for everyone that best fits their available time and energy. If you live in or close to Missoula, our volunteers especially need more hands on deck to spread out the workload. To volunteer, please contact John Greener '79 at jrgmtgriz79@gmail.com or (815) 459-0099. The experience of giving back to Montana Beta has enriched my life in so many ways. I've had the wonderful opportunity to meet and work with new brothers. It has been a joy to see these young men grow over the years and witness their enthusiasm for our chapter. Seeing our home at 1120 Gerald stand strong because of what we have accomplished gives me great pride. It has all been a fantastic experience. Our 2017-18 annual campaign involves several projects that have been on hold for years, but have become necessary. The aging exterior siding shows real signs of deterioration and needs to be replaced. Landscaping the yard also needs to be completed. Our goal is to raise $90,000 for the two projects. Our database shows we have contact information for almost 700 Montana Beta alumni, but less than 20 percent have contributed to either the capital or annual campaigns. For those who have made contributions, we are forever grateful and wouldn't be where we are today without your support. For those who haven't contributed, if you could find it in your budget to donate $50, $100, $200, or more, it would help us reach our goal of keeping the chapter house a safe home for the men of Montana Beta. We need your help and anything you can do will be greatly appreciated. Please make plans to join us Homecoming weekend, October 12 through 14, for our Montana Beta 90th anniversary celebration! G ary Fish '62 wasn't sure about joining a fraternity, but Bob Means '62 and Tom Ross '62 convinced him to give Sigma Alpha Epsilon a try. "I was financially strapped, but they thought I could join the kitchen crew to earn my room and board. It was the best thing I could have done. Montana Beta gave me a sense of belonging and expanded my social network." His role in the kitchen fostered a relationship with the house cook, Mrs. Yonce, and housemother, Mrs. Hodgson. "They were wonderful ladies whom we all appreciated very much. They gave us some sense of stability." Gary also built a friendship with his Little Sister of Minerva, Gwen McClain Anderson. "Our little sisters were wonderful women and they helped us view women with the respect they deserve. I have a lifelong friendship with my little sister to this day." During his years at UM, Gary was a cheerleader and loved football games. "One of my fraternity brothers bet me a six pack of beer to try out for cheerleading. They needed two men and I knew two men were auditioning, including Louis Garcia '64. I thought it would be easy to screw up the Continued on page 2
