TENNIS ATP, Delray Beach Open and Rio Open, Early Round: 9:30a.m., TENNIS. Ontheair Tapiasankashottotieitat 31 with 2:20 left in the pe- riod. The Bobcats went in front but Tucker Berens hit a lay-up in the final min- ute to give Corning a 35- 34 lead at the half. The Bobcats took the lead back to open the third and kept it through the pe- riod, up 47-45 going into the fourth. A 5-point Bobcats run to open the final period of regulation put the Car- dinals down 7 at 52-45 with 5:23 to play. A pair of free throws from Berens, a three from Noah Zoppi and 3 free throws from Tapia tied it up at 53. Both Nick Poloquin, who had 26, and Riley Potthast, with 11, fouled out in the fourth period, putting a dent in the Bobcats' de- fense. The Cardinals, trailing by 4 inside the final min- ute, put together a 6-point run on buckets from Hoag and Berens and foul shots from Corey Busta and Zoppi to go up 59-57 with 30 seconds to play. Para- dise would miss a three and Corning picked up a foul on the rebound to give the Bobcats a chance to tie it from the line. They did. Austin Mishoe shot for three for the win in the fi- nal seconds and missed. Tapia had a shot at a put back but it didn't drop and the game went to overtime knotted at 59. The Bobcats struck first, but Tapia hit a three, Busta was fouled on a lay- up, which went in, and made the free throw and Zoppi hit a pair of threes to put the Cardinals up 71- 66 with 55 seconds to play. A pair of fouls and flaw- less shooting from the line by Mishoe and Tapia ex- tended the Cardinals' lead and sealed the win. Zoppi and Tapia each had 3 threes, 17 points and 10 rebounds in the game to lead the Cardinals. Hoag put up 16 points and 8 rebounds, Busta had 10 points and 12 rebounds, Berens had 8 points and 8 rebounds and Mishoe had 7 points, including a three, and 2 rebounds. Ty- ler Grine pulled in a re- bound as well. While Zoppi struggled to hit some shots in regu- lation, he came up big in overtime. "Clutch, he's a clutch player," Wilkins said. "When it counts the most he's at his best." As the No. 1 seed the Cardinals have a bye in the first round of the NSCIF Div. 4 playoffs Wednesday. They will host the win- ner Friday of Wednesday's game between No. 8 Sutter and No. 9 Oroville. Cards FROM PAGE 1 with coaches, media mem- bers and officials. He leads the NBA with 17 techni- cal fouls this season, lead- ing to a one-game suspen- sion earlier this month. He will be suspended again af- ter his next technical foul and every two beyond that for the rest of the regular season. Divac frequently men- tioned culture and char- acter when explaining the thought behind the deal, saying the franchise needed a change despite being only 1 games be- hind Denver for the final playoff spot in the West- ern Conference. "I really love DeMarcus," Divac said. "I think he's a great kid. It just wasn't a fit right now with what we're trying to do. I wish him all the best. I hope this will have a positive effect on his career." The deal to pair Cous- ins with Davis sends a mes- sage that the Pelicans are more concerned with mak- ing a 25-game push for the playoffs this spring then where they'll be drafting next offseason. Pelicans general man- ager Dell Demps previous' attempts to provide Davis a requisite supporting cast has been under increas- ing scrutiny as losses have mounted — New Orleans is 23-34, 2 games out of the final playoff spot in the West with 25 games left. When the deal was made official Monday, Demps thanked Pelicans owner Tom Benson and top exec- utives Mickey Loomis and Dennis Lauscha for their "continued support and providing the resources for us to be successful." "This is an exciting time for Pelicans fans as we con- tinue our quest for long- term success," Demps said. The Kings, who are a game ahead of the Peli- cans in the standings, will now enter rebuilding mode without Cousins. They could deal other veterans for prospects or picks be- fore Thursday's deadline but even the rebuilding plan has issues. Kings FROM PAGE 1 but maybe get a few more balls in the gap or better." Posey also made a ca- reer-high 122 starts be- hind the plate last season and played 123 games at the position in all. Bochy plans to have him catch fewer games if at all pos- sible. "I'd like to try to rest him a little more, to be honest. We'll see how it goes, how thegamesgomorethanany- thing,"Bochysaid."Ifthey're good crisp games, that plays apartinhowmuchheplays. If you have a bunch of long games you have to rest him a little bit more." Improving his diet be- came a priority for Posey, with wife Kristen's assis- tance. "My wife gets credit for that," Posey said of his clean eating. "I just don't have the option to eat bad stuff from what she buys. I think it can be very benefi- cial. The main thing is try- ing to eat as raw as possi- ble. That's kind of the way we look at it. We're still go- ing to eat our grains and we're not against the carbs that way, but just trying to eat as raw as possible." They also work together through his foundation as strong advocates and sup- port for pediatric cancer research and treatment through their foundation. Posey has never had a hardtimefindingmotivation to work in the offseason, yet the disappointing way last seasonendedprovided"alit- tle bit of an extra push." The Giants are revamp- ing their bullpen after the struggles down the stretch and in their final game: squandering a three-run lead in the ninth against the Cubs using five reliev- ers.
