Februaryendswitharare treat for Northern Califor- nians who enjoy gospel mu- sic. Everyone is warmly in- vited to attend a free con- certbytheBlackHistoryCel- ebration Choir at 3 p.m. Fri- day,Feb.24inHarlenAdams Theater on the Chico State campus, sponsored by the University's Office of Diver- sity and Inclusion. The Black History Cele- brationChoirmadeitsdebut to a standing ovation from an overflow crowd at Trin- ity Methodist Church ear- lier this month, during Mar- tin Luther King Day celebra- tions. Gospel music has been a source of strength and inspi- ration for many generations of Americans. For its Feb. 24 perfor- mance the choir will "sing" and otherwise celebrate black history, with the cele- bration ranging from tradi- tional spirituals and good- news gospel songs—chron- icling the development of sacred music in the African- American Christian tradi- tion — to spoken word and interpretive dance. Following its February performance the Black His- tory Celebration Choir will continue to perform — un- der a new name, yet to be chosen — in Butte County and beyond. For disability-related ac- commodations, call the Of- fice of Diversity and Inclu- sion, 898-4764. CONCERT Local gospel choir celebrates Black History We are often unaware of our high expectations to- ward other believers. We think we are accepting, kind, and forgiving to everyone, un- til another believer does something that hurts or disappoints us. Strong relationships are built over a long period of time. We see each other at church. We say hello. We share potluck meals together, and feel accepted and good when someone saves us a chair at their table. Slowly, we begin to share stories of our past and, if we are lucky, we will connect on common ground. Then the relationship begins to grow. It isn't until we experi- ence a severe pain or trial in our life that those rela- tionships are tested. It is during these dark times, when we are more apt to be disappointed in the reac- tions of others. We can feel isolated, alone, and misunderstood. We can feel rejected. We can struggle with anger over the fact that no one has contacted us. However, we are most likely misjudg- ing our fellow believers. The problem may simply be they do not know what to say or do, so they say and do nothing. They fear they may cause more harm than good. They may be pray- ing for us, thinking about us often, and are very con- cerned for us. Most people want to help, but they are not mind readers. So when people do not reach out to us in our pain, perhaps we need to reach out to them, letting them know what we need. On the other hand, we may be the ones who feel like we do not know what to say or do. Honest love and concern is always wel- come. A simple note or card saying, "I am thinking of you", can be a great encour- agement, whatever the cir- cumstances. We can in- vite the person out for cof- fee and be a good listener. They do not need our an- swer to their situation; they simply need to know some- one cares. I do not know about you, but I have enough trouble making healthy de- cisions for myself, without attempting to run someone else's life. Both sides of this coin may be in danger of judg- ing the opposite side. Paul said, "...I do not judge myself. For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. Therefore, do not pro- nounce judgment be- fore time, before the Lord comes, who will bring light to the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Each one will receive his commendation from God. (First Corinthians 4:3-5). Jesus put it this way, "How can you say to your brother, 'let me take the speck out of your eye', when there is a log in your own eye"? (Mt. 7:4). We tend to be blind to our own foibles and carry bright flashlights to spotlight other people's faults. There are things that must be pronounced wrong, (i.e. any kind of abuse, harm to others, etc.). But we need to be careful about attributing to others harmful motives when we cannot see into hearts. Dr.ShirleyEngebretsenis a long time contributor to God Talk. GOD TALK I don't know what to say Shirley Engebretsen By Joyce Tsai Bay Area News Group FREMONT A Hindu-Amer- ican advocacy organization filed a civil rights lawsuit in federal court Wednesday against the state Depart- ment of Education, state Board of Education and sev- eralschooldistrictsthrough- out the Bay Area. The California Parents for the Equalization of Educa- tional Materials, also known as CAPEEM, and three Bay Area residents filed the law- suit to challenge what they say is the discriminatory treatment of Hinduism in California's history-social science curriculum. They say the curriculum appears to highlight the positive as- pects of other religions, such as Christianity, Judaism, Is- lam, Buddhism and Confu- cianism, but does not pro- vide the same treatment of Hinduism. The lawsuit also names the San Ramon Val- ley, Cupertino, Milpitas and San Francisco school dis- tricts, at which the CAPEEN has members with children attending. Although Hindu-Ameri- can groups declared victory in their campaign to get the Board of Education to use the term "Ancient India" in- stead of "South Asia" this summer, more work needs to be done in making the state's social science frame- work and curriculum less discriminatory toward Hin- duism, said Glenn Katon, an attorney who filed the law- suit on behalf of the Hindu- American group. The state board's adopted curriculum still devotes al- most half the discussion of Hinduism to the caste sys- tem, he said. But for every other religion, the board has followed a policy of refusing toincludenegativeexamples that would instill prejudice, he alleged. For instance, there is no mention of nega- tive interpretations of Chris- tianity that supported slav- ery or condemned same-sex relationships, he said. "Hinduism is portrayed from a critical perspective, so I guess really what we're asking for, is just be consis- tent," he said. Also, the adopted frame- worksays"thatthecastesys- tem is a religious belief of Hinduism, but that's highly debatable…," he said. "And it's obviously highly nega- tive and would embarrass and shame people who hold that religion." The complaint further al- leges other ways the Califor- nia curriculum treats Hin- duism unfairly and differ- entlyfromallotherreligions. "As a mother of two chil- dren in California pub- lic schools and a member of the Hindu community, I have seen the pain and em- barrassmentthecurrentcur- riculumcausesourfamilies," said Arti Kapoor of San Ra- moninastatementissuedby CAPEEM. "I hope this law- suit will force the Depart- ment of Education to cor- rect the discrimination we now face." COURTS Hinduism in school curriculum Civil rights lawsuit filed against state ANDACHU—BAYAREANEWSGROUP A Hindu-American advocacy group, California Parents for the Equalization of Educational Materials, has filed a lawsuit over what it says is the unfair treatment of the Hindu religion in California's school curriculum. Pictured here, Himanshu Wagh, who was then 16and a sophomore at Irvington High School, supports equal treatment of Hindu-Americans in the state textbooks and curriculum, he said.
