SONOMASTATE Pu ry ea r na me d to d ea n' s li st REDDING Simpson Univer- sity for Seniors is offering two courses in March for adults of any age. The non-credit, no-home- work classes, which be- gin March 3, are taught on Simpson's campus by university professors and professionals in their field of expertise. Classes meet from 10:20-11:20 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. • The Rise and Fall of the Two Greatest Civiliza- tions of Central America — 10:20-11:20 a.m. Although today most of Central America is called Mexico, the ancient culture by that name was overrun by the cruel and powerful Aztec civilization. As the Mexicans and other groups had driven off the less mil- itaristic, but highly ad- vanced Mayan culture, so they were made vassals of the Aztecs. And then the Spaniards appeared. Pre- senter is David Dummer. • World War II: The Pa- cific Theater — 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. World War II began with the Japanese invasion of China in 1937. Within five years the Japanese Empire had reached its maximum territorial extent, stretch- ing from New Guinea to Alaska. This is the story of the rise and fall of the Japanese Empire, 1930-1945, and of the titanic clash between Japanese militarism and American democracy. Pre- senter is Don Claspill. Two courses are offered each month through April. The cost is $95 per per- son, per course, or $145 for couples registering for the same course. ADULT EDUCATION For many adults in Te- hama County the possi- bility of completing the requirements for a high school diploma may seem impossible for various rea- sons, but 38 adults had met the requirements and graduated as of Jan. 12 through Tehama eLearn- ing Adult Education. Any adult who is 18 years old or older can reg- ister at the center and im- mediately begin online courses to complete the remaining requirements. One student recently graduated at the age of 54, which proves that noth- ing is impossible if a per- son takes the initiative to start the process. Any adult who is inter- ested in earning a high school diploma or who was previously in any adult education program may call the Tehama eL- earning Center at 527-7055 to schedule an appoint- ment. Registration is available online at tehamaschools. org under Schools, Adult Education. It is helpful if the person brings a copy of the high school transcript as well as any other transcripts, such as community col- leges. If the transcript is not available, a fax will be sent to the last high school the person attended to re- quest it. The curriculum is com- pletely online, which al- lows a student access to the courses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A high school diploma allows the graduate to en- ter attend a community college or trade school, ap- ply for Free Application for Federal Student Aid or en- ter the military. The center is at 900 Palm St. in Red Bluff, the former Shasta College campus. The office is to the right of the flag pole. A high school diploma at 35?
