In today's society, it seems like more and more people are lash- ing out in anger. Yes, we all get frustrated from time to time, how- ever I've never had so many ran- dom calls from angry people in such a short amount of time. Their anger had nothing to do what I've done or not done, but they wanted to ex- press anger about something in our society. They just need to be heard. Remember Lil' Mikey from the Life Cereal commercial in the 70's who will do anything? "You should do something about this or that" is what I hear repeated- ly. Whether it's about someone not doing their job right, an employee discriminating against a customer, a therapy dog that's questionable, government not living up to expec- tations, an event which didn't go off as planned, a speed sign you don't like, the list goes on and on. I get that our society is very angry right now and frustration seems to be everywhere, but pushing that anger onto someone else is not the best solution. Learn what to do... Anger-expert psychologist How- ard Kassinove, PhD, tells us that anger is part of the fi ght-or-fl ight reaction. It had survival value in the past and it has some positives in the present. Many of these, how- ever, are short-term benefi ts as few of us like to spend time with angry people. However, anger can be an appropriate response to injustice. Anger also plays a useful part in so- cial movements, but anger affects us physically, too. Research has found that anger is an independent risk factor for heart disease. Learn to see negative situations as oppor- tunities to develop coping skills and learn new behaviors. Relaxation is a great tool to deal with anger, since angry folks tense their muscles and develop headaches and stomach aches. When someone hurts or offends you? If anger, pain and fear come out of you, it's because that's what's inside." ~Wayne Dyer I never was subject to sea or air sickness. Flew in bombers for two years. Came home on a large ship during the worst storm in several years. No problem. Crossed the gulf of Alaska during a storm. On a 72 foot boat so sick, afraid I would die, then afraid I wouldn't. If you are angry, it is important to remember that you have chosen your response to the situation. It may have been an impulsive reac- tion but it is still your choice. More importantly, even if you have react- ed swiftly in anger, it is your choice to remain angry. You can choose to remove yourself from the situation, or attempt to see things from the other person's point of view. There are many things that you could do to the change the situation. Some simple things to do...go out in nature and listen to the birds sing- ing, go rock hounding, watch the sun set on those gorgeous moun- tains, go for a walk, wave at your neighbor even if they piss you off, and smile at strangers. By the way, smiling releases pleasure hormones called endorphins, natural painkill- ers and antidepressant hormones such as serotonin (even fake smiles do the same!) So fake it till you make it!
