LadyCardinals4, Oroville 1 OROVILLE The Corning Lady Cardinals scored twice in the first half and twice in the second to take a 4-1 win Tuesday over the Oroville Tigers. Freshman Nayeli Lara had a big day, with three goals and four steals, and was named player of the game. "Another hat trick to add to the book," coach Ed Cu- riel said. "Lara is one of our starting freshmen and a phenomenal striker. Nay- eli knows exactly where to be at the exact time. She has incredible speed that has been such a huge ad- dition to our team." The other Cardinals goal came from Heidi Magana, who had three steals as well. Megan Ross had an as- sist an four steals, Steph- anie Zagal had an assist and three steals and Tif- fany Gaytan had an assist and five steals. Masiel Anaya had 15 steals and Brisa Martinez had 10. Goalkeeper Anna Reyn- olds had seven saves in the win. The Cardinals (7-6-2 overall, 4-1-1 league) were scheduled to host the Par- adise Bobcats (11-8-3 over- all, 4-0 league) on Thurs- day afternoon. Spartans 6, Foothill 2 PALOCEDRO TheRed Bluff Spartans boys went into Palo Cedro on Wednesday night and came away with a 6-2 win over the Foothill Cougars. Alex Valencia had three of the Spartans' six goals, had three steals and was named player of the game. "Valencia had a great game, he came in hungry and ready to win and ready to score," coach Claudio Martinez said. "With that heendedupwithahattrick. Valencia has that needed drive to score and push the ball. He can read the play very well and he works ex- tremely well with his other forwards and center-mids. He is one of our top goal scorers and we're lucky to have his skill up top." Jose Birrueta had two goals and three steals on the night and Kevin Meza had a goal and a steal. Freshman Miki Ago had two assists, freshman Ma- rio Ascencio had an assist and two steals and Jona- than Valencia had an as- sist and four steals. Goalkeeper Jose Garcia had 11 saves in the win. The Spartans (10-7-2 overall, 3-5-1 league) are scheduled to host the Pleasant Valley Vikings (19-0 overall, 9-0 league) at 6 p.m. Friday. Cardinals 7, Oroville 1 OROVILLE The Corning Cardinals boys team beat up on the Oroville Tigers on the road Tuesday, com- ing away with a 7-1 win. As of 5:30 p.m. Thursday no stats had been posted for the game. The Cardinals (11-5 over- all, 3-2 league) were sched- uled to host the Paradise Bobcats (8-9-4 overall, 2-1-1 league) on Thursday after- noon. Soccer FROM PAGE 1 CHIP THOMPSON — DAILY NEWS Red Bluff's Noel Adams moves the ball down field Wednesday night against Foothill. infielder Jae-gyun Hwang will provide intrigue at spring training and add depth at third base. THEY'RE SET The Giants have two great options at third base in Eduardo Nunez and Conor Gillaspie. Nunez dealt with a strained right hamstring late in the season and couldn'tstartthefour-game NL Division Series loss to the Chicago Cubs. Second baseman Joe Panik looks to stay healthy after he was limited to 127 games last year and dealt with a con- cussion after a back injury derailed his 2015 season. Nunez batted .288 with 16 homers and 67 RBIs be- tween the Twins and Gi- ants, hitting .269 with four homers, 20 RBIs, nine dou- bles and three triples in 50 games for San Francisco. Gillaspie became an un- likely September and play- off star in Nunez's place. He hit a three-run homer off Jeurys Familia in the ninth inning of a 3-0 wild- card win at New York. Gil- laspie's catch over the rail- ing and into the photo well in Game 162 against the Dodgers will be remem- bered, too. THEY'RE NOT Bochy isn't sure what to expect with the departures of three key relievers who were part of the three title teams — Santiago Casilla, who re- joined the Oakland Ath- letics across the bay, Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo. San Francisco blew 32 saves, including nine in September. Five reliev- ers combined to squander Game 4 of the NL Division Series against the even- tual champion Cubs, who scored four runs in the ninth inning to win 6-5. "There's no question, when you have three guys that become free agents from your bullpen like Lo- pez and Romo, Casilla, that's a lot of experience to miss and not that they're not going to be back," Bo- chy said. "They're not with us right now, and that's something you do miss." ON DECK Right-hander Matt Cain has been lim- ited to 43 starts over the past three seasons because of injuries, so he will be de- termined to have a great spring to build momentum for the season. Giants FROM PAGE 1 ery single play and I will go over those for the rest of my life. That's kind of the life we live as coaches." Shanahan now will call the 49ers' plays and, thus, he said he won't need to hire an offensive coordina- tor, a void last attempted by four-time Super Bowl- winner Bill Walsh in the 1980s, when his offensive staff featured Mike Hol- mgren, Sherman Lewis, Dennis Green and Bobb McKittrick. As an ode to 49ers lore, Shanahan recalled serv- ing as a ball boy at training camps in Rocklin while his father was the offensive co- ordinator from 1992-94, a tenure culminated by their last Super Bowl win. Ky l e S h a n a h a n added:"It's a dream come true, not just to be a head coach, but a head coach at a place like this, where you talk about Bill Walsh, George Seifert, Steve Mar- iucci, Jim Harbaugh and you can go down the line of coaches and players." Harbaugh? Yep, Shana- han has the moxie to in- voke the name of the out- cast coach who led the 49ers to three straight NFC title games and a Su- per Bowl berth. Harbaugh left after the 2014 season to spark the 49ers' avalanche from contention. Lynch also drew upon the 49ers past, and he told York at the onset of this re- gime how they needed to encourage alumni back into the fold. Lynch called out by name six former players — Keena Turner, Jesse Sapolu, Guy Mc- Intyre, Eric Wright, Steve Bono and Parys Haralson — in attendance Thurs- day inside Levi's Stadi- um's standing-room-only auditorium. "Those guys created the standard that we're striv- ing for," Lynch said. "I've reached out to a lot of these guys and let them know that not only are they wel- come, we really want these guys around because that's what we're aspiring to be. I've also told them we can't ride on their coattails." 49ers FROM PAGE 1 hole when play was called, clinging to a miraculous 1-under par score for his unfinished round. Day, meanwhile, was thanking the tee time gods following the completion of his. "Yeah, it was tough," said the 29-year-old Aus- tralian. "The wind was pretty stiff. And then, ob- viously, the rain. But luck- ily enough for me we got to tee off pretty early. Going an hour earlier was nice for us. I think we only had probably four holes in the rain." Day has held the No. 1 ranking for 46 consecu- tive weeks but things are tightening up at the top due to his back issues that have limited his playing schedule. He hasn't won a tournament since he cap- tured the Players Champi- onship last May, the end of a fabulous run in which he won seven events over the course of a year includ- ing his first major title, the 2015 PGA Championship. Day said being No. 1 has been a double-edged sword.
