Those who choose to join the 1964 Society will receive recognition in the next edition of The Scimitar newsletter, but more importantly, these gifts will better the lives of our active members. The Kansas State Delta Chi Educational Foundation was started in 1998 and has supported Kansas State Delta Chis by providing opportunities for individuals through scholarships, leadership grants, and other educational purposes. This includes supporting the foundation's eight reoccurring endowed scholarships, which provide approximately $4,000 in funds to undergraduate brothers each year. Your membership in the 1964 Society honors our chapter's rich history by paying tribute to the original founding year of our chapter, which chartered on October 13, 1964. Just as our brothers before us believed in the fraternity's mission—promoting friendship, developing character, advancing justice, and directly assisting with the acquisition of a sound education—so too must we support the chapter for the years to come. Stroth '15* Brotherhood Society (Up to $99) *Member of 1964 Society DAN YUNK '71 FOUND COMMUNITY, OPPORTUNITIES AT DC KANSAS Friendships and Memories Last a Lifetime C oming from a small, rural community, Dan Yunk '71 came to KSU in search of a smaller living arrangement than a larger dormitory. Fortunately, he had a good friend from high school, Steve Bihlmaier '70, who had joined Delta Chi Kansas State the year before and was thoroughly enjoying his DC experience. Steve and Tom Hunter '69 journeyed to Osborne, Kansas, and sold Dan on the idea of joining the Delta Chi brotherhood. "While living in the house, many friendships and good memories were made throughout the years," Dan said. "Many of the friendships and memories remain to this day nearly 50 years later." As a sophomore, Dan served as vice president at DC and was then elected to serve two terms as president. Those leadership experiences, especially holding the position of president, paid dividends as he entered the workforce. "Learning to work with a diversity of individuals all living under the same roof, managing budgets, conducting meetings, planning events, leading projects, resolving conflicts, thinking more strategically about the future of the house, and negotiating contracts were just a few of the things I learned at DC that helped prepare me for life after college," Dan stated. Dan earned three degrees from Kansas State University: a B.S. in secondary education in 1971; an M.S. in curriculum and instruction in 1975; and a Ph.D. in educational administration in 1987. Dan is the owner of Yunk Consulting, LLC, and is in the midst of transitioning into full- time retirement. He started his consulting business in 2014 after retiring as the CEO of Kansas Farm Bureau. Prior to his career with the Kansas Farm Bureau, Dan served as a principal and as a superintendent of schools in USD 383 Manhattan-Ogden; he retired from USD 383 in 2000 after a 28-year career in education. "Having received a quality education at K-State coupled with my leadership experience at Delta Chi, I discovered I was able to transition easily through various careers and leadership opportunities and it led me to seek out additional leadership opportunities," Dan said. He has also enjoyed assuming the chairmanship of numerous volunteer boards such as the Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce and the Kansas State Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 2009, Dan was named a K-State Alumni Fellow, and in 2014, was chosen as the Manhattan Citizen of the Year. Dan, along with his wife, Cheryl, served as house parents for DC Kansas State for one year immediately following his graduation and their wedding in August of 1971. "We were honored to have been selected to serve in this capacity, and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and friendships that continued to grow and last a lifetime," he said. At that
