I ndiana Gamma's cycling team continues to work hard and make us all proud. It is no secret that being out of the Little 500 for nine years made returning to the event an incredible task, but Indiana Gamma has always been an incredible Chapter. With finishes of 28th in 2011, 29th in 2012, 18th in 2013, 8th in 2014, 4th in 2015, and 2nd in 2016, the Indiana Gamma cycling program is strong and back on top! One of the hardest tasks in rebuilding the program after the recolonization was to teach our young brothers about the storied cycling program that Indiana Gamma has had through the 65 years of the Little 500. Starting over from scratch was a true challenge and reestablishing the necessary winning culture was difficult. Beginning again in 2011, our riders put their heart and soul into just qualifying for the race. Since then, our team has continued to gradually improve, and in the last two years ΣΑΕ cycling was in a position to win with fourth place and second place finishes respectively. If you haven't seen the race in a few years, you should definitely plan on attending on April 22. You can also view the last couple of years on YouTube by searching for the 2015 or 2016 Men's Little 500 Race. It's an outstanding watch and be prepared to hear the announcers talk a lot about ΣΑΕ! The "All-Time Men's Little 500 Race Results" currently ranks us at fifth and our "All-Time Qualification Results" ranks us third. That's not too shabby for missing the race for nine straight years. We graduated three seniors, Andy Krahulik '16, Mitch Sasseman '16, and Jake Hartmeister '16, from our 2016 team, but our current 2016-17 team members, led by team captain Joe Krahulik '18, understand their role and are just as committed, working very hard for that one day in April! Once again, our guys took their weeklong winter training trip to Austin, Texas, December 28 to January 5. Austin and the surrounding Texas Hill Country is a fantastic cycling spot, and has worked out really well as our winter training ground for the past few years. On their return, when not out on the road, our guys spent a great deal of time in Indiana Gamma's indoor cycling facility working on speed, varying intensity intervals, increasing lactate threshold, VO2 max, and cadence training, just to name a few training methods. It's the time of year that takes a strong physical and mental commitment from the riders. Of course, it's also the time of year that we incur the majority of expenses and we will need to turn to our alumni for financial support. You have heard us say it before, from year to year, but in order to have a successful top- notch cycling program, we need between $8,000 to $10,000 per year. Last year, we were able to send all seven riders to Austin, and our plan was to send everyone again this winter as it provides invaluable cycling experience, bonding, and camaraderie. Additionally, this allows us to keep continuity with our program, providing us with the necessary stable of riders we need for the future. Money that we raise goes toward race fees throughout the year, equipment, tools, winter break training trip transportation, accommodations and food, spring break training and food, and training aids, which include rollers, CompuTrainers, branded cycling jerseys, shorts, warm-ups, gloves, and etcetera. We approve all of the bike team's expenditures so we are good stewards with the money that is contributed. In the past, we have been fortunate to have some generous financial alumni support and it has made a huge difference in what we can or cannot do as a team. We thank those alumni who have supported us in the past and encourage others to step up and join the growing number of alumni contributors by sending a check today! Checks can be made out to Jim Fissinger '83 at 8444 Spring Mill Court, Indianapolis, Indiana 46260. New contributions via PayPal can also be made to jim.fissinger@us.tdk.com. Thanking you in advance for your support and generous contributions. We will keep you updated on the bike team's progress as the April 22, men's 67th running of the Little 500 race nears.
