Anothe Did Did Another Famous North Carolinian... er Famous North Carolinian e William Sidney Porter riter illiam Sidney Porter Writer William Sidney Porter was born on September 11, 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. He passed away at a young 47 years of age on June 5, 1910 in New York City. He wrote under the pen names of O. Henry, Oliver Henry and Olivier Henry. His famous short stories are know for their wit, wordplay, warm characterization and clever twist endings. He is most remembered as O. Henry. His father was a physician and his mother died when he was just three years old. He was then raised by his grandmother and was tutored by his aunt. He drifted from many different jobs and when he moved to Texas he led quite a social life. He was a good singer and musician. He played both the guitar and mandolin. He met Athol Estes a 17 years old girl from a wealthy family. He mother objected because her daughter was suffering from tuberculosis. However, on July 1, 1887 they eloped and were married. Athol encouraged her husband to pursue his writing. She gave birth to a son in 1888 who died hours after birth. In September she gave birth to a daughter, Margaret Worth Porter. He started a weekly called "The Rolling Stone" eventually reaching a circulation of 1500, but it failed in April 1895. He fi nally got a job at The Houston Post writing. He gathered his ideas for writing by hanging out in hotel lobbies and observing and talking to people there. He used this technique throughout his writing career. He was convicted of embezzlement while working at a bank earlier in his life and was found guilty and sentenced to fi ve years in prison. He wrote while in prison. However, he used pseudonyms and had a friend send in the stories to McClure's Magazine so that no one would know he was in prison. He was released from prison after serving three years for good behavior. His most prolifi c writing period started in 1902 when he moved to New York City be be near his publishers. While there he wrote 381 short stories. He wrote a story a week for over a year. He became very popular. He was a heavy drinker and his health deteriorated markedly in 1908. It affected his writing and he died on June 5 of the following year. After funeral services in New York he was buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Asheville, North Carolina. His daughter - his only child - Margaret Worth Porter who died in 1927 was buried next to her father. His "Gift of the Magi" is one of his most famous short stories. He is acknowledged world wide as a great writer. proud to announce participation in a statewide partnership with almart to collect school supplies for economically-disadvan- taged students in North Carolina. er con- al- Communities In Schools of North Carolina Network Joins Walmart in Largest Walmart Back-to-School Supply Drive in NC's History WANT TO TRADE WANT TO TRADE GRANDMA'S 2006 Suzuki Firenza, (25k, ex- tra tire, 30+MPG), for good 6 cyl Buick or Crown Vic.
