15 O ne of the attributes that sets 21st Century Alpha Sigs apart from many fraternities and historical- ly for Mu Chapter at the UW is the decade plus years of consistent academic performance in the mid 3.3 to higher 3 point averages. This is a praise-worthy accom- plishment considering that this is the average for over 90 brothers. Ninety! Numbers like these only happen when the brotherhood as a whole recognizes, acknowledges and agrees to strictly adhere to an academic policy where studying and getting good grades is expected. Yes, it is still a fraternity…a social fraternity. And, there is lots of social! But the social in 21st Century Mu Chapter happens mid-week with big parties, social gatherings, intramural athletics and philanthropic events. Still, even with wel- comed mid-week distractions, often every week, grades do not suffer. Why? Academics is built into the chapter's culture. The position of Scholarship Chair is taken serious- ly. Pledges are trained and woven into the scholastic fabric of the chapter from the get go. Everyone knows that you have to keep your grades up to stay in the House. We have heard that before, but they are serious about it. It only take one bad grade point to start pulling the overall average down….and that is bad for the moral of the chapter and for recruitment. Mu Chapter won't let a brother willingly fail and pull others down. If a brother has trouble, they help them. So the undergraduate brothers live up to the frater- nity statement, "Gentleman and Scholars." Yes, academics is a way of life at Mu, not a byproduct of fraternity living. And thanks to thousands of dollars of alumni support the Mu Chapter House is an Internet friendly study hotspot with more cyber upgrades planned for the near future. Scholarship is a Priority at Mu Average GPA for 90+ Brothers is a 3.3 by Brian Minard '15 I ntramural sports have maintained a strong presence within the fraternity. With our most current undergraduate brothers com- ing from an athletic high school background, ASP is consistent- ly competitive in quarterly intramural sports that range from 6-foot and under basketball to slow pitch softball to two v. two volleyball. Alpha Sigma Phi maintained its status as a slow pitch softball wrecking machine, capturing its third straight softball title this past summer (dating back to spring 2015). Intramural football is as competitive as ever this fall with key returners and additions who are hungry to capture more IM titles. Back-to-back Tri Delta philanthropy volleyball tournament vic- tories highlight an impressive track record of philanthropic sports success.
