Alpha Slants of Beta theta Pi A l u m n i n e w s l e t t e r f A l l 2 0 1 6 A fter two years of hard work, the Alpha Chapter Steering Committee is excited to finally welcome back young Betas into our beloved Alpha Chapter! More information is available about student recruitment on pages 2-3, but it's important to note that so much has gone into this reestablishment process and I'm excited to report on a few key updates. First, the Cultural Committee has been working to finalize the Alpha Chapter Honor Code. Each new member will sign this Honor Code (and renew each year), so it is clear what is expected of him as a Beta. Beta has always been about a higher standard for oneself, and this exercise will help reinforce that point each year. The Culture Committee is also putting the finishing touches on the annual review process, the house director job description, and developing a long-term partnership with a professional coaching firm. The Improvements Committee has been equally busy as they plan to bring the house at 200 E. High Street up to par with other student housing around campus. Tom Converse, an Alpha Beta from the class of 1972, won the bid for architectural services this May and will take our chapter through schematic design, bidding, and construction oversight. While another fraternity rents the house for another six months, the plan is to close the house for a 14-month renovation beginning this May to prepare for an August 2018 move-in. No surprise, this project will take significant capital and a team of alumni has been assembled to help our chapter secure these resources. We are off to a tremendous start and are excited that many alumni are making this project a priority. There will be more to update in the coming months, but financing negotiations are currently underway to stay on schedule as resources are secured over the next few years. While it's been a labor of love these last two years, the work of the steering committee is far from done. We know from our past setbacks that more alumni involvement going forward will be critical. For too many years, our chapter has relied on a select few to carry the load (Ralph Fey '40, John Dolibois '42, Pete Barnhart '66, Tom Fey '68, Jonathan Brant '75, and Brian Breittholz). Going forward, we will need more brothers to step up and help build a bridge to the next generation of Betas. They will work to bring new members into the chapter as spring recruitment begins at Miami. The steering committee met again in November to continue progress on the goals established two years ago.
