The ohio state university page 5 T he men of the Beta Phi Chapter are committed to the pursuit of excellence in every sense of the word. Hopefully my report will do justice in communicating the true beauty of our fraternity. Actives Focused on Academics Our members prioritize academic achievement above all else. At the end of the 2015-16 academic year, Beta Phi earned a 3.43 semester GPA and a 3.39 cumulative GPA, which positioned our organization as the third-highest achieving fraternity and ninth-highest achieving Greek organization at Ohio State. Sixty-four members earned Dean's List recognition and nine members earned a 4.0 GPA in majors ranging from sustainability studies to electrical engineering. Philanthropic Endeavors Philanthropy is one of our passions, and Philanthropy Chairman Peter Bruns '18 is pushing the limits of what we can accomplish. We raised $2,000 for JDRF last year with high expectations building for this year's events. Peter's innovative vision has introduced a "broomball" tournament to our upcoming Delt Deep Fry with the hope that an emphasis on community engagement will correlate to an increase in dollars raised. Building a Better Brotherhood Beta Phi lives and breathes recruitment. After the initiation of a 31-member Beta Zeta pledge class last semester, Recruitment Chairman Varun Jambunath '18 worked tirelessly to bring in a group of nine excellent men at the start of the school year. These new members are a diverse group of athletes, musicians, and leaders that, under the guidance of New Member Educator Tommy Hooker '18, will undoubtedly become active contributors toward the future goals of Delta Tau Delta. Beta Phi Brothers Develop as Leaders, Bring Honor to Chapter Gerard Basalla '17, Danny Rogers '19, Andrew Huber '17, and Chapter Advisor Jeff Pelletier '94 at 2016 Karnea in Orlando, Fla. Brothers goof off together outside the Shelter this fall. Leaders in the Making Our duty as members of the Greek community is to break down the subconscious barriers that divide society. Through event pairings, development seminars, and community outreach, we are doing just that. We have already collaborated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon on a member introduction cookout and with Kappa Sigma on a joint football tailgate. Last semester, we brought in Marcus Luttrell, Epsilon Zeta '98, author of Lone Survivor, former Navy Seal, and Delt alumnus, to talk to Ohio State students about honor and courage. Brother Kalman Roemer '17 has played a pivotal role in establishing an "Adopt-a-School" relationship with Graham Primary School, where Delts help elementary school students develop reading, writing, and math skills. Brothers Gerard Basalla '17, Danny Rodgers '19, and Andrew Huber '17 attended Karnea, and Cornell Blake '19 will represent the Beta Phi Chapter at Ohio State's upcoming Buckeye Greek Leadership Institute and Greek Diversity Retreat. Campus Connections Believe it or not, our members are just as involved outside of Delt as they are inside the chapter. Gerard Bassalla '17 serves as the president of Ohio State's Student Government; Ricky Mulvey '18 is vice president of Ohio State's comedy club; Timothy Kelly '16 recently finished his senior season on Ohio State's varsity golf team; VP External Braden Heyd '17 is comedy chairman of the Ohio Union Activities Board, which is one of the most well-known and respected student organizations in the country; Michael Berthold '18 and Forrest Weihe '18 collaborated on a song that currently has 240,000 listens on Spotify; and new member Austin Brizee '18 is a trumpeter in The Best Damn Band in the Land. Timothy Kelly '16 plays in the NCAA Kohler Regional golf tournament. Grant Southwood '17 shows off the DTD flag on a study abroad trip to Antarctica. Parent, Alumni Support Essential to Chapter Success Yet, without our parents and the alumni that came before us, none of this would be possible. To our parents: your hard work, encouragement, and unwavering love is the foundation upon which we have begun to build our manhood. We truly enjoyed seeing all of our parents in October for our Parent's Weekend! And to our alumni, those to whom we owe our strong brotherhood and the amazing housing renovation that is in progress: thank you for preserving an organization that has instilled in us the values of the truth, courage, faith, and power. Beta Phi is a great place only because of the equally great people that are dedicated to its success. Please feel to reach out and stop by the house for a visit whenever you are in the area.
