Beta Phi Crier beta phi Chapter of Delta Tau Delta the ohio state university n fall 2016 W e hope this finds you well and preparing for a wonderful and relaxing holiday season. There are many things to be thankful for this year. Among others, we are very thankful for the alumni, undergraduates, and friends who are supporting the Beta Phi: Doorway of Opportunity campaign. With over $1.6 million in signed pledges for the rebuilding of our Shelter, 2016 has been a good year for Beta Phi Chapter. But with only two months left until the new year, we hope you can make 2016 even better. In the last newsletter, you received an update on the undergraduate successes and the status of our campaign. Since announcing our campaign last fall, we raised nearly $350,000 toward our $2 million goal; however, we only have 9.9% alumni participation. If we want to have a state- of-the-art Shelter that stands the test of time at The Ohio State University, then we must see an increase of dollars and participation (the average participation in Greek campaigns is 25%) from our 1,119 active alumni. We could not be more thankful that we found our way to Delta Tau Delta, and we're sure you and nearly every other Beta Phi alumnus feel the same way. The fraternity has likely meant different things to each of us, but we can all be thankful that we have this common bond between us. If we desire for future young men to have the same meaningful experiences, we must pay it forward. As you examine where you would like to designate your year-end charitable dollars, we ask that you prioritize Beta Phi Chapter. We are asking every brother to make a pledge or contribution, no matter the size. You can spread your gift of $500, $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000 over five years, making it a manageable annual or monthly payment. Please use the enclosed form to make your one-time gift or pledge today. You may also make a gift online at http://betaphi.kintera.org/donate. We wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. Fraternally, Millard B. "Buck" Byrne '66 Campaign Co-Chairman (614) 562-7355 William A. "Bill" McCloy '82 Campaign Co-Chairman (513) 515-3049 More than $1.6 Million Pledged by Dedicated Alumni Campaign for Beta Phi Gains Momentum at Year-End (Continued on page 3) T he Beta Phi Chapter of Delta Tau Delta had a quality and stature of men that inspired Bill Scarff '50 to join the brotherhood, while the friendliness, maturity, goals, positive energy, and having similar interests as his brothers gave him a reason to stay a part of the brotherhood. His grandson, Peter "Nelson" Scarff '11, gained interest in joining Beta Phi through his family's legacy, but stayed with the chapter for the same reasons as his grandfather. The family legacy doesn't stop with Beta Phi— the Scarff family has also been working in the landscaping and horticultural business together since their family business, Scarff's Nursery and Landscape, began in 1889. Nelson recalls that he got his start in the family business by watering at the family garden center as a child. Bill received his degree in agronomy, and Nelson received his degree in landscape horticulture, which they have been able to use to help support the Beta Phi renovation project. Bill was motivated to support the Beta Phi: Doorway of Opportunity campaign because of his late son, William Scarff Jr. '80, and grandson, Nelson, who both followed in his footsteps and carried on the family's legacy at the Beta Phi Chapter. For Nelson, he had always wanted to change the landscape at the Shelter as an undergraduate, so he jumped at the opportunity when it arose. Another driving force for the Scarff family's support of Beta Phi's capital campaign was to keep the memory of William Jr. alive. William Jr. maintained a strong bond with his Beta Phi brothers after graduation, many of whom attended his memorial service in Ohio last year. Taking great pride in the Beta Phi tradition, Bill hopes that he can help keep that tradition alive through his support of the capital campaign; he highlights that he also hopes more alumni will support the campaign to perpetuate the greatness fraternities have to offer for young men. Nelson is grateful for his undergraduate opportunities and experiences and Family Legacy Inspires Bill Scarff '50 and Peter "Nelson" Scarff '11 to Lend Helping Hands Nelson Scaff '11 and his wife, Megan.
