Bill Scarff '50 and Peter "Nelson" Scarff '11 (Continued from page 1) Mark Snyder '86 Highlights Importance of Alumni Support of Capital Campaign A fter attending a recruitment party with Paul Rosendale '87 and Tom Woods '87 at Beta Phi during his freshman year, Mark Snyder '86 quickly realized how much he had in common with the men of Delta Tau Delta at The Ohio State. "I formed strong friendships with my fellow brothers and stay in touch with many of them through social media, traveling, and alumni functions," he said. Some of his favorite memories from his undergraduate years include Pledge Week, initiation ceremonies, social gatherings with the sorority houses, and Greek Week, when he fondly recalls flying in their chapter president's family's single engine plane to take photos of the Shelter from the air. As an alumnus, Mark was introduced to the project by Campaign Chairman Buck Byrne '66 and fellow Delt John Shave '89. Mark had the pleasure of joining Buck for lunch to hear about the plans for the Shelter project, during which Buck explained the importance of having alumni support for this project and, in turn, allowing the continued success of the Beta Phi chapter. "It is with Buck's tremendous effort and outreach that the Shelter addition and upgrades have become a reality," he stated. "It's important that alumni realize that through their generous donations, the Beta Phi Chapter will continue as a dominant force in the Greek community and endure to continue producing future leaders in our society." Involvement in the campaign takes as much or as little as alumni are willing to give, Mark highlighted. Support can be given through monetary donations, products, services, or time. "As alumni, we need to help build for the future," he said. Mark is the vice president of Snyder Concrete Products Inc., where he oversees seven retail and manufacturing plants located in Dayton, Cincinnati, and Columbus, Ohio; the company supplies masonry materials to the construction industry. In his spare time, he enjoys being with family and friends, saltwater fishing, and spending time in Marco Island, Florida. He has three children: Emily (24), who is an OSU graduate; Mitchell (21), who is a senior at Otterbein University; and Audrey (17), who is a senior in high school. If you would like to reconnect with Mark, he can be reached at snyderbrick@hotmail.com. DTD Pride Motivates Joel John '90 to Give Back to Beta Phi W hen Joel John '90 came to The Ohio State University as a freshman, he decided to join Delta Tau Delta because he wanted to belong to a group to help shrink the size of the university. He was also drawn to Beta Phi because of its reputation as an athletic fraternity, and he stayed because of the friendships he formed with his brothers. Now, as an alumnus, Joel was drawn to help with the capital campaign because of his interest in landscaping and his desire to give back to Beta Phi. Stemming from an interest in drawing, plants, and the great outdoors that began in high school, Joel earned his degree in landscape architecture and owns M. J. Design Associates, where he manages the day-to-day operations of the design build company. Prior to supporting the Beta Phi: Doorway of Opportunity campaign through his landscape architecture work, Joel had done landscape projects for Tri Delta sorority at Ohio State for several years. Ultimately, his pride in the Delta Tau Delta fraternal organization is what motivated him to lend a landscaping hand. "Like any organization, it's only as good as its members, and you get out of it only what you put into it," he said. Joel believes that as an alumnus, it's his turn to give back and hopes that more alumni will jump on board to support the renovation project and the future of Beta Phi. Joel and his wife, Molly, live in Dublin, Ohio, with their two children, Alison (16) and Andrew (13). In his spare time, he enjoys gardening and anything to do with his family and sports. If you'd like to reach out to Joel, he can be reached at jjohn@mjdesignassociates.com.
