"I recognize that my experience at Alpha Nu was made possible by financial generosity from Betas who preceded me. Now it's my turn to invest in the futures of young men who commit themselves to excellence, self-governance, and balance. In an age when fraternity life is threatened across the country, Alpha Nu remains a bright, shining example of what fraternity life can be." – Peter Curzon '08 B eta's focus will remain fixed on the development of scholars and leaders. It is our intent to help young men build and enhance the leadership skills necessary to make an impact on campus, in their workplaces and communities, and in their families. Now is the ideal time to provide Alpha Nu with the resources to build upon our history of leadership and strong academics. Through financial analysis, the Alpha Nu Educational Foundation leadership believes an annual distribution of $40,000 will be necessary to accomplish its goals. Assuming an annual rate of return of 4%, the Foundation needs assets totaling $1,000,000. The Alpha Nu Educational Foundation has identified four areas of focus for the scholarship funds: needs-Based Scholarships According to data from the Office of Institutional Research and Planning, KU's tuition has increased at an annual rate far greater than inflation. Since 2002, the cost of an in-state credit hour has gone from $77.75 to $304.10—an annual increase of 9.5%. As the cost of an education increases, more and more families are faced with the difficult decision of how to pay for education. Alpha Nu wants to maintain its commitment to finding the best young men and this will likely include men who don't have the means to afford membership. The needs-based scholarship program is designed to help offset the membership and living costs of Beta Theta Pi. merit-Based Scholarships At the core of Alpha Nu is a commitment to academic excellence. Alumni of all eras are proud of the scholastic successes of the chapter. Records provided by the University of Kansas show that from 1985 through today, Beta Theta Pi has laid claim to the overall top fraternity GPA a remarkable 92% of the time. Many things in our fraternity have changed throughout the last 140 years, but academic success is not one of them. The Educational Foundation wants to reward and recognize those members who excel in the classroom by providing annual scholarships. Senior Scholarship Program An issue plaguing fraternities across the country is the exodus of senior leadership in the chapter house. Reasons include, but are not limited to, the desire for more privacy, more space, and nicer accommodations. Alpha Nu understands the value and stability these men provide the chapter, and created the Senor Scholarship Program as a way to encourage these men to live—and take active roles—in the chapter through graduation. This program provides a 35% discount of a member's room and board costs if they meet specific requirements. These include maintaining a GPA above 3.6, holding an officer position during their time in the chapter, and attending at least two General Fraternity meetings. Leadership Training Scholarships Today, more than ever, our country needs strong leadership. Few organizations can teach and implement the skills required like a fraternity. The General Fraternity and university provide a number of resources to complement the skills learned in the chapter house, and the Foundation would like to provide the resources the men of Alpha Nu need to take advantage of these opportunities.
