SECURING THE LEGACY OF GAMMA KAPPA: Building for the Next 100 Years Goodbye to Old 111 E. Stewart Road—Demolition Begins! ERA LEADERS STEP UP T ake one last look at 111 E. Stewart Road, because one of North America's most appallingly ugly structures will soon be razed. Built in 1912, the old struc- ture has faithfully served many purposes from chapter house to academic offices, but its looks will be significantly improved as it becomes a big pile of rubble. On November 7, we applied for a demolition permit from the Columbia City Council, which means the new chapter house construction project is of- ficially a "go" and began in November! Over St. Patrick's Day weekend in 1980, I visited brother Ken Schmid '75 in Chicago. Ken graduated with me in 1978, was the fra- ternity educator, and provided a never-ending source of entertainment with his wise cracks, piranha fish aquarium, and more. At that time, alumni had recently received a mailer from Lambda Chi Alpha requesting a contri- bution and I remember asking Ken if he had responded. I'll never forget his answer, "No, because no one has called me." In other words, a mailer was fine, but Ken wanted the personal interaction of a conversation before he would participate. Dear brother Ken's wish will come true in the coming months as Gamma Kappa has begun a telephone campaign to reach every brother from the 1940s to present to share the news about the new Gamma Kappa chapter house and ask for financial support. We have a great team of era leader volunteers lined up to call alumni based on initiation year. Most of the 2000s-present classes are being canvassed by the undergraduate brothers. Jason Pulos '86 and Mike Hull '84 are heading a team calling all the 1980s, and we have a host of brothers calling individual classes, with several working on a special giving project. We can still use help with leading the mid- 1950s, late 1960s, and the 1990s, so we are working to fill the remaining gaps (noting that we weren't colonized from 1999-2003). An additional benefit from our outreach will be to update the alumni roster. From our ini- tial calls, it is woefully out of date. When you are called, I sincerely hope you respond not with just a donation, but rather an investment in the future of Gamma Kap- pa. If you have questions, my cell is (210) 540-9747. It rings 24/7 and I'd love to hear from you. Winston Churchill had a lot to say about a lot of things, so I'll conclude with one of his thoughts regarding giving: "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Here's hoping each of us make a life through our giving.
