Each unit (they now have fi ve units they have adopted) gets four packages each month-- two with food items and two with non-food items (toiletries, books, magazines, socks, cool ties etc.) The postage for these packages is now $16.80 for each box. Items for the boxes are from donations and some are purchased if they are not donated. This fundraiser helps with the cost of the packages and the items that are not donated to go into the boxes. Items are always needed for the boxes--canned food (not pork), crackers, peanut butter, tuna, soups, veggies, fruit (canned) gum, cereal or granola bars, sardines, etc. are always needed. Toiletry items like shampoo, toothpaste, tooth- brushes, dental fl oss, bug spray, Kleenex, feminine products, cards, Come and enjoy in some com- munity fun and entertainment. Plus be able to sample and judge all of the donated soups and chow- ders at the festival and have a won- derful desert for the price of only $5, all of which will be donated to the Friends of Quartzsite Food Bank to help those truly in need of a helping hand. The 3rd Annual Soup & Chow- der Festival will be held Saturday, December 10th at the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) located at 235 E. Ironwood Street. The tasting starts at noon until 4pm or till food runs out. Attendees will select which soup or chowder they think is the best and a People's Choice award will be given out to them. (Q.I.A.) on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Main Hall. The tables will be fi lled with donat- ed items from the vendors, busi- nesses, and individuals who help by supporting this event. The money being raised goes for postage for the packages that are sent out twice Operation Hero Comfort holds Annual Silent Auction Dec. 10 DVDs, CDs, books, current maga- zines, etc. are also needed. Operation Hero Comfort has sent out hundreds of packages since they started in 2005. They often get back letters, cards and even some- times fl ags and certifi cates from the units as thanks for their support. These will also be displayed at the event so people can see how much these care packages from home are appreciated by the troops. There will also be a card table set up where you can send your Christmas greetings to the troops and it will be sent in the next packages after the auction event. To donate items for the silent auction, or for the boxes for the troops, please call Anita Carlson at 763-639-9330. There will also be a box set up at the event if you want to bring something for the boxes. There will be raffl es and door prizes as well. Please come out and sup- port the troops and put your bid in on any items you might want.
