Founded by Cisco Canada and now managed by TakingITGlobal, Connected
North is a leading-edge program that delivers immersive and interactive
education services to remote and underserved northern communities
in Canada. Through high-definition two-way video communication and
collaboration technology, we provide participating students and their
teachers with access to content that is engaging and innovative with the
hope of increasing feelings of empowerment in school and in life.
The program is structured in four types of sessions: virtual experts & field
trips, classroom to classroom cultural exchanges, virtual career fairs and
teacher capacity building. Each of these sessions is planned in collaboration
with the school, taking into consideration the unique strengths, challenges
and learning goals for each classroom.

Shelby from John Arnalukjuak High
School in Arviat Nunavut shares her
experience after a Connected North
session with a physician from St. Louis
University, "we got to see what the body
looks like without blood and what the
brain looks like – you don't see that in
real life! I think it's important for us to be
doing something other than just being
in a class and engaging in different
ways of learning." Since being involved
in the program Shelby has participated
in a variety of other sessions including
one with a Canadian actor who helped
prepare the students for their social
studies project presentations. Shelby's
project was on the importance of
literacy and since then she has been
working on implementing a reading
program in her community!
