Interacting with former archons, James walters '84, stuart eynon '85, stephen noble '85, and Michael Marchand '86, Jay developed strong leadership skills, even as a college student. Jay continues to use these skills nearly 30 years later as founder and president of Group Experimental learning (GEl)—a business that designs and facilities offsite, executive retreats and leadership development programs. "My time as eminent archon was significant in my development as a leader. While it was challenging, it changed the trajectory of my life," he said. "Those leadership opportunities helped me get into business school and deal with conflict, and now what I do is help with leadership development." Throughout the years, Jay has had the opportunity to work with companies such as Microsoft and Genentech, and in 2008, GEL collaborated with the Olympic sailing team. Jay enjoys being a service to senior executives who recognize the value of investment in team cohesiveness and collaboration, but don't have the time to strategize for it. At GEL, companies go on retreats with programs that involve getting people out of their comfort zones and learning about leadership skills and communication styles. They do so by engaging in extreme challenges, such as avalanche search and rescue simulations, sailing, and camping. "The key to success is finding the intersection of what you really love, what you do well, and what people will pay money for," he said. "Find your passion and then find a way to make money doing it." Aside from GEL, Jay is also a ski instructor and business school mentor. He enjoys teaching people how to ski, sail, hike, and camp for the first time, and seeing people accomplish things they've never done before. "Every day I get to be an educator and see people have 'ah-ha' moments where they truly grow and have an amazing time," he said. Jay spends half of his year in Colorado and the other half in the California bay area. He would love to connect with brothers in both areas, and can be found around Vail, Colo., from December to April, and Sausalito, Calif., the remainder of the year. In his free time, Jay enjoys sailing, boat racing, cycling, and wine tasting.
