BURNS Talk about waiting until the last minute...The Burns Bulldogs had to go to overtime on the road at R-S Central to complete a come from behind win of 28-21. Under fi rst year Head Coach David Devine, Burns' incredible and surprising regular season fi nished with a 9-2 record. In overtime, Magale Burris had a four yard touchdown run, followed by the all important and successful extra point attempt by Kicker Zach Benfi eld. The reason the extra point kick was even more special was because Burns had a penalty following the go ahead touchdown. This made the kick longer than the normal point after, but Zach didn't let the pressure stop him from kicking the football through the uprights. The R-S Central, Hilltoppers still had a chance in overtime, where with a touchdown and extra point they could tie the game or six points with a two point conversion would win it. However, the Bulldogs' defense would end the game after R-S threw an interception into the hands of B.J. Hopper. Next for Burns is the Post Season: After a tie breaker was conducted this past Monday, because Burns, Crest and Kings Mountain all tied for the top spot in the 3A division of the South Mountain Athletic Conference, it was determined that the Dawgs would be the third seed out of the SMAC. Burns will most likely be on the road for their fi rst round playoff game in the Western Bracket of the state with action starting Friday, Nov. 18th. Their opponent has yet to be determined. It was Senior Night for the Mountaineers in their last game of the regular season. A game they took a lot of pride in as a team that overcame injuries and the loss of star players, yet still fi nished strong. Kings Mountain Running Back Darian McClain rushed for three touch- downs in the whipping of East Burke. Other offensive power for the Mountaineers, included Wide Receiver Kavin Mosley, who caught a 48 yard touchdown pass that was thrown by Sophomore Quarterback Kaylon Wade. Darian didn't add his usual big numbers in the category of rushing stats in this game, but still led the team with 48 yards on a night it wasn't needed. Signs of another young and rising talent for Kings Mountain and Coach Greg Lloyd is Sophomore Running Back Raquelyn Mack, who added a 41 yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter. Next for Kings Mountain in the Post Season: After a tie breaker was conducted this past Monday, because Burns, Crest and Kings Mountain all tied for the top spot in the 3A division of the South Mountain Athletic Conference, it was determined that the Mountaineers would be the second seed out of the SMAC. Kings Mountain could be at home or perhaps even on the road for their fi rst round playoff game in the Western Bracket of the state, with action starting Friday, Nov. 18th. Their opponent has yet to be determined. In the end, Shelby ended a four game losing streak to Crest with a 21 to 19 victory. Shelby fi nished with a perfect 11-0 regular season record, which means their last loss was the 2015 meeting against their rivals, the Chargers. Shelby Quarterback Malik Sarratt is now third all time in single season passing yardage for the Lions at 2,711. Sarratt's 44 yard pass to Receiver Darius Fuller was the big play that put Shelby in position for a three yard touchdown, the only one of the game, by Devin Gullatte. Devin by the way, was praised by his coaches for having to play both ways (offense and defense) throughout the evening. Golden Lions Running Back Truck (Jawan) Sims rushed the football 16 times for 103 yards. However, in this game that was a defensive battle at times – it was four made fi eld goals by Shelby Kicker Ethan Triplett, which gave Shelby just enough points to escape with the win. Ethan's fi eld goals of 28, 29, 29 and 28 yards also enabled him to set a new school record for most made fi eld goals in a game. Now it's time to talk about the gutsy effort by Crest that brought them from being behind 21-6 to a 21-19 score and just falling short of forcing a possible overtime. Crest Quarterback – Senior Cameron Peeler - was a big part of the emotion on the fi eld. Cameron had a 64 yard QB keeper touchdown run and also threw a super long 94 yard scoring pass to Wide Receiver Tyshun Odom. Crest did miss an extra point in the fi rst half of the game that could have given them a one point lead at halftime. In stead it was 6 all at the half. The Crest defense was responsible for helping set up the other touchdown after they sacked Shelby's Malik Sarratt, which caused a fumble. The fumble was recovered by the Chargers' Devyon Mc- Clain, which enabled Crest offense to hand off to Tavian Brintley in the wildcat for a one yard score. Following Crest's last score of the game and with just over two minutes remaining, a two point conversion, a pass in the wildcat formation with Tavian throwing a to Justin Foster, was tipped away by the Lions' defense to secure the win. On defense for Shelby, Junior Dax Hollifi eld led the way again in tackles with seven. Shelby's defense also got two points off a safety when they tackled Cam Peeler of Crest in the end zone. Shelby's victory gave them the overall SMAC Championship for 2016. NEXT FOR CREST IN THE POST SEASON: After a tie breaker was conducted Monday, because Burns, Crest and Kings Mountain all tied for the top spot in the 3A division of the South Mountain Athletic Conference, it was determined that the Chargers will be the fi rst seed out of the SMAC. Crest will most likely have a home game for their fi rst round playoff contest in the Western Bracket of the state with action starting Friday, Nov. 18th. Their opponent has yet to be determined.
