Spaces remain for seven waterfowl hunting seminars being offered by the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission and Ducks Unlimited starting next week. The free seminars, which will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., are designed for new and experienced hunters. Topics will include waterfowl identifi cation, hunting methods, decoys and calling, fi rearms and ammunition selection, specialty clothing, and bird cleaning and cooking. Additional hunting information not covered in the seminar also will be available. Pre- registration is required and participants must register online. A question-and-answer session, along with a brief overview of hunter R3 (recruitment, retention and re-activation) initiatives, will conclude each seminar. Dates and locations are: Oct. 24 Cumberland County Extension Center, Cumberland County 301 East Mountain Drive, Fayetteville, N.C. 28306 Oct. 25 Pitt County Extension Center, Pitt County 403 Government Circle, Suite 2, Greenville, N.C. 27834 Nov. 16 Bass Pro Shops, Cabarrus County 8181 Concord Mills Blvd., Concord, N.C. 28027 Nov. 17 Forsyth County Extension Center, Forsyth County 1450 Fairchild Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27105 This is the fi rst time the Commission has partnered with Ducks Unlimited to provide free waterfowl hunting seminars, continuing its mission to increase awareness of and participation in wildlife-associated recreation. "Similar to the turkey hunting, deer hunting and deer processing seminars we're offering this year, these waterfowl seminars are designed to serve the growing interest in the great waterfowl hunting opportunities our state offers," said Walter "Deet" James, the Commission's hunting heritage biologist. The seminars also provide a forum for Ducks Unlimited to promote its Sportsmen for Tomorrow program, according to Justin Aycock, the N.C. youth and education coordinator for the North Carolina chapter of Ducks Unlimited. "Sportsmen for Tomorrow's goal is to promote youth involvement in the outdoors and conservation," said Aycock. "These seminars will engage a new generation of sportsmen, so that we can pass on the waterfowl hunting and conservation tradition." Thomas Jefferson is in good shape to make the 1A playoffs with fi ve wins so far. R-S Central, Chase and East Rutherford all have legitimate chances to make the post season, but they have work to do. Thomas Jefferson (5-3, 1-2) easily won this past week over Community School of Davidson 61-14 last week. Bill Lay has been running downhill lately. Lay has 19 touchdowns so far this season and 17 in just the last six weeks and 748 yards in the last fi ve games. The Gryphons get Bessemer City coming to town this Friday (10/21/16). It should be interesting as to who will prevail...Thomas Jefferson's offense or Bessemer City's defense. R-S Central fell on the road to Kings Mountain this past week, 35-7. The Hilltoppers lead for a quarter and stuck around for a half. R-S Central will host a big game this coming Friday as East Burke comes to town (10/21/16). Anything can happen, but East Burke hasn't scored more than 20 points in a game all season long. The Trojans had a by last week, but lost 25-6 to R-S Central the previous Monday. Chase will host Kings Mountain on Friday. East Rutherford had two key injuries and fell to Draughn this past week. Despite nearly 200 yards of offense from backup quarterback Calvin Jones, penalties and turnovers destroyed any sort of momentum East had. The Cavs will go to Crest on Friday (10/21/16). R-S Central looks to be the only team to make the volleyball playoffs, but East Rutherford has a shot to still get there. R-S Central continues to play better as they just beat a solid East Burke this past week. Chase men's soccer is still undefeated at 14-0. They have just four regular season games left and hold a two-game lead in the SMAC. It's the defense that paced this club by allowing just four goals all season. Scoring 81 goals during that times isn't too shabby either. The biggest remaining game happen when Shelby comes to town on October 24. Thomas Jefferson soccer also just won its 10th game of the year. That becomes the fourth year in a row that Brian Espinoza has coached them double-digit winning seasons. Unfortunately, I believe the year maybe over for the Carolina Panthers. They sit 1-5 overall and have three losses to division rivals. Unless Carolina wins 9 of the next 10 games, it's wait til next year mode. The Panthers are still competitive and talented enough, but the defense just isn't the same as a year ago. Not having Josh Norman makes a big difference. I don't care what anyone says. NASCAR: Talladega comes up this weekend. Expect big packs of cars and big wrecks to come. Give me Brad Keselowski this week. For some reason, he is the man to beat at 'Dega by capturing the last two NASCAR events at the Alabama track. The racks of these monsters are as unique as the stories of how they made it to the wall of fame. They come in 16, 20, and even 30 point varieties. They may have drop-tines, multiple brow tines, stickers, and a host of other deformities; and yet, they are trophies that all hunters long for. It's said the reason these racks become non-typical is either from injury or illness, and sometimes even genetics. That is, sometime early in their development a tragedy took place. It was one so great that it affected the entire life span of that deer. It was, undoubtedly, traumatic and perhaps even life threatening. And the scars that were left could not be hidden from friend or foe. Even though they overcame the experience, everyone would always know something bad had happened. However, look what took place after that experience; the maimed became the monarch and the tragedy produced a trophy! And what was once the ugly duckling became the swan of the woods. Herein, is a wonderful lesson. Many of you think your tragedy is too big to overcome. The injury was too severe. The illness was too devastating. Your past is tainted with one bad decision after another. You feel the scars of the battles have marked you as unwanted or unneeded. It seems now you are looked at in a different way – that you are non-typical. Friend, God's specialty is turning the non-typical into the trophy. He mixes love, truth, and time together to produce a work of his grace. Your past is his canvas and your hurts are the colors he uses to paint the picture of what he wants you to become. Don't spend your time regretting an unchangeable past. Instead let God take it and make it into a place where He can show you off, as a trophy of grace.
