I like the daily interactions I have with my staff and with our community. I also like having the ability to assist in making San Rafael an even better place than it already is. 8 What is the hardest aspect about being a police chief? I find it difficult to not be able to respond to lower priority calls for service as quickly as I would like us to. We are so busy sometimes that those victims have to wait an extended period of time for assistance. I am amazed at their patience and understanding. I want us to be able to help right away. I am hopeful that we can get our staffing to a level that will address this concern as well as important areas such as traffic enforcement. 9 There has been a lot of anti-police sentiment nationwide, and conversely, more support for officers from a lot of people in the wake of tragedies such as the Dallas officer shootings. Have these events and sentiments changed the way you manage the department and approach community engagement? Recent events certainly have an impact here. I know my officers and professional staff carry these tragedies in their minds and think about how they may be affected. My message to them is that we must look out for one another. Another message is that our community truly supports us. This support continues to be evident in the well wishes sent to us and by folks bringing cards and goodies to the station. Lastly, every contact we have each day is an opportunity to positively engage with those we serve. My staff knows that and does a great job of creating goodwill. 10 What do you do outside of work that people might find interesting? I am pretty boring outside of work! I enjoy running, biking, following the Giants, and reading fiction. n Debbie Wiemken & Rooney McAlonan Appearing at Cains Tires only, with all that style... where else would you want to go! –Pat McAlonan You all know my daughter, Rooney.
