BURNS (7-0 overall / 4-0 conference play) The points were slow coming but in the end Burns won by a nice margin of 24-7 over the East Rutherford Cavaliers and better yet remained undefeated this season. Burns had only a 3-0 lead at halftime after Kicker Zack Benfi eld connected on a 31-yard fi eld goal attempt. The Bulldogs took a 10-0 lead in the 3rd quarter after their fi rst touchdown of the game came off of a short rushing score from Chris McClure. It got close though late in that 3rd quarter when East Rutherford picked up a touchdown making it only a 10-7 Burns lead. Then came the 4th and fi nal quarter and the Bulldogs really put on their game face. The 10 to 7 lead advanced to 17-7 following an 8-yard touchdown run by the dependable Tailback Aaron Hill. Aaron would add a 37-yard touchdown run later in the game - along with Benfi eld's extra point, which made it 24 to 7. Burns rushing game was a big part of the win with Aaron Hill and Chris McClure combined rushing totals equaling almost 200 yards of offense. The Bulldogs defense held strong down the stretch with leaders of the squad Nate Black and Stormy Mosteller leading the way. Stormy was the team's leading tackler on the night. Burns open week couldn't come at a better time, as this proven unbeaten team prepares for defending State 2A Champion and county rival, the Shelby Golden Lions, October 14th. Shelby won last season's battle. CREST (5-1 OVERALL / 3-0 CONFERENCE PLAY) Last Friday, Crest had to make the trip into Rutherford County for a South Mountain Athletic Conference game against the Chase Trojans without their head coach Will Clark on the sideline. Even without the head man, it was well worth it after a 35-0 win. Crest's offense didn't get cranked up until the second half, but in the meantime their defense had another good showing. The D got the overall game shutout that included causing two Chase fumbles in the 1st half and recording a safety in the 2nd half. Justin Foster, expected to play on the next level at either Notre Dame, Tennessee, or Clemson, led the way for Crest defense. On offense, the Chargers got rushing touchdowns from Rackwon Turner and Davion Pryor (both of four-yards) and then its passing game came alive in the 4th quarter. The air attack included Quarterback Peyton Summerlin striking with long passes to Jarius Strong and Tyshun Odom helping set up other scores. The most impressive pass for a touchdown was when Peyton hit Tyshun on a 68-yard throw. THIS WEEK- get ready for the annual meeting and SMAC Conference showdown between the Chargers and Mountaineers. In last year's meeting between these county rivals it was all Crest 48-14 during a season in which the Chargers never lost a game. The game, hosted by the Mountaineers, was a night that the Crest offense, led by Quarterback Willie Green, showed off their aerial attack. This was the game that Willie G, now graduated, set a school record - seven touchdown passes. The Chargers had over 450-yards in passing stats in the vic- tory. Kings Mountain, in the loss, did a good job not allowing Runningback Tre Harbison of Crest to accomplish his usual damage, which led to Crest making it up through the air. Wide Receiver Jayden Borders had six receptions for 90 yards and four touchdowns enabling him to break a single-game record for receiving touch- downs. Shelby QB-Malik Sarratt threw those four touchdown passes to Jayden of 10, 15, 11 and 4 yards! Malik was 20 of 32 in passing for 247 yards and all those touch- down throws. Defensively, Dax Hollifi eld was making some history himself after making ten tackles in the game, which broke Shelby Football's most career tackles record. Only a junior, Dax reached 400 tackles to surpass a record previously held by Garrion Addison. Adding to the points was Golden Lion Runningback Jwan Sims, who had two rushing touchdowns, including the fi rst score of the game - a 1st quarter 8-yard run. Shelby Kicker Ethan Triplett, as he's been doing most of the season, added a long fi eld goal of 35-yards. Shelby's aggressive defense only allowed East Burke's offense to get three fi rst downs in the entire game. This included a pick-six by CJ Ross, who took the interception of a East Burke pass to go 30-yards into the end zone. This week is Homecoming at Shelby, as the Lions host East Rutherford, a SMAC team they beat last year 54-20. In that game the Lions had 400 yards of passing. Shelby will be going for their 13th win in a row going back to last season. Positives in this game for the Mountaineers, included better play from their Sophomore Quarterback Kaylon Wade, who seems more comfortable in leading the offense, and a focused and furious defense. The defense picked off three interceptions thrown by Draughn's Quarterback with two of them taken away by the Mountaineer's Tashun Allison. Tashun even got involved on the offensive side of the ball when Kaylon Wade hit him on an 11-yard touchdown pass. As for Kaylon, he also had 1st half touchdown passes to Receivers Kavin Mosely and Malik Phillips. It was a 46-yarder to Kavin and 18-yard completion to Malik. The Malik score was followed by a successful two-point conversion that put Kings Mountain up 28-0 at the half. Kaylon fi nished the night going of 9 of 17 in pass attempts for almost 200-yards. There were also two Mountaineer rushing touchdowns, one in the 1st half and one in the 2nd half, by Darian McClain, who was the game's leading rusher. Another salute goes to Kings Mountain's defense for only allowing 87-yards of total offense in the game for Draughn. This, while Kings Mountain's total offensive production was 383-yards. THIS WEEK - Kings Mountain travels up highway 74 West for their annual showdown with the Crest Chargers in another SMAC match up. It's hard to believe, but the Mountaineers haven't beat the Chargers since 1998. The fi nal that season was 30-21. That happens to be the same season that Kings Mountain went all the way to NC 3A State Championship Game under the direction of then head football coach Ron Massey.
