ListentoLife.org LISTEN TO LIFE by Dr. Joey Faucette Last month, it was unusually hot in the part of the world where I live. So I decided that early morning was the best time to do some outdoor work like pulling weeds and grass out of our fl ower beds. The temperature was cooler and the humidity lower…and there were no interruptions at 6:00 a.m. I also discovered that it was a great time to listen to life and pray and meditate. There's no one around to want anything from me. I'm outdoors which is my favorite place in the world to be. And I'm doing a rather mindless task—pulling weeds and grass out of my rose beds—or at least I thought it was…until as I pulled the weeds and grass, I realized that there were some rogue habits and attitudes growing in the spiritual bed of my heart; a place where I was to cultivate good character traits could be overrun with the bad and ugly. So as I cleaned out weeds, I cleaned out my spirit. I uprooted the negative so the positive could be nourished and grow. Cultivate your spirit by rooting out the bad and ugly and growing the good as you listen to life and make a positive life, not just a living, in a negative world. Through A Woman's Eyes By Martha Hynson mhynson1@gmail.com • www.welcomelord.com Reasons To Celebrate On July 5th, before I'd even cleaned up the charred remains of fireworks, I went to our local grocery store and was greeted by a display of pumpkins and scarecrows. A few weeks later, I found an Easter egg in my backyard. This is a fitting metaphor for my life. In the middle of summer, some folks are getting ready for fall, but I'm still not through with spring. Maybe you experience time in a similar fashion. If you've ever had a rotten pumpkin on your porch in December, you can probably relate. Don't you sometimes wish life had a pause but- ton? If only there were more time for porch sitting, I'm sure I'd have noticed that moldy pumpkin a lot sooner and at least added some Christmas lights to perk it up. Then again, there are days I wish I could simply swipe and move on. Instead, the world keeps turning at a steady pace and I gallop or plod through each 24 hours finding the occasional Easter egg in July. Speaking of that, I have a holiday symbol on display right now whose special occasion came and went months ago. Can you spy it in the picture below? It's a nativity scene escapee. I kept meaning to put it away but I never got around to it. Of course, now that the calendar says September, and since I have friends who decorate for Christmas before Halloween, I'm pretty sure I can consider myself ahead of schedule instead of behind. Honestly, I'm glad the angel didn't end up in the attic. I've enjoyed having a reminder of Christmas around all year. It's the best of both worlds—a little like pushing a pause button, while also reminding me that time moves swiftly and Christmas will be here again before I know it. If that little figure could speak, I think she'd remind me of something else, too—perhaps share a bit of wisdom gleaned from her renegade year spent observing my family from her perch in our foyer. I think she might tell me that, from her van- tage point, she's seen reasons to rejoice in every single day. I have no way of knowing what a ceramic figu- rine would actually say, of course. She might just ask, "Don't you people ever dust around here?" I can, however, through scripture, know what God has to say. And while He's silent on the proper time to display holiday paraphernalia, He does speak to us about the wisdom of living fully in each day… This is the day that the Lord has made. I wil l rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24 There is always a reason to celebrate! Can't think of one? Here's a list of holidays paired with reasons to rejoice all year long.
