CLEVELAND COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK CREST CHARGERS Foster has covered over 15 State Championships combined in the Carolinas in his years as a high school football broadcaster and reporter, with the majority of those involving Cleveland County teams. The Burns Bulldogs (4-0) The Bulldogs kept their perfect season going after a 31 to 14 victory last week against Chase. Burns' Magale Burris, a usual leader on defensive, was called on and fi lled in marvelously as a rusher on offense after replacing an injured Aaron Hill in the 2nd quarter. Magale became the rushing star of the night with a touchdown and 189 yards. Credit was given to the Burns offensive line, who was praised for a great evening of blocking. Regular starting Quarterback Cam Barbee was back and had a 50-yard touchdown pass to one of his favorite receivers BJ Hopper. Kicker Zach Benfi eld got the Bulldog faithful on their feet by adding a 29-yard fi eld goal to the score. On defense, Burns got 3 sacks from Stormy (causing a storm) Mosteller, while as a unit they caused several Chase fumbles. This win gets the Bulldogs off to a good start in SMAC (South Mountain Athletic Conference) action that gets much tougher this Friday. This week a Cleveland County rivalry game takes place when the Dawgs travel to Kings Mountain. Last year's meeting was won by the Mountaineers. Can Burns fi nd a way to remain undefeated? The Crest Chargers (2-1) Draughn may not be one of the stronger competitors in the SMAC (South Mountain Athletic Conference), but any time you go on the road and you're the defend- ing conference and state champion – you'll be targeted and have to be ready to play. Crest did just that, as they shutout Draughn last Friday 27-0. Charger run- ning backs that got into the end zone in this contest were Jarius Strong with a 2-yard touchdown, Tavion Brintley with an 8-yard touchdown, and Quarterback, the upstate S.C. Transfer, Peyton Kemmerline with a 1-yard score. Peyton also threw a short 5-yard touchdown pass to Receiver Tyshun Odom. Crest continued using a two quarterbacks system with Cameron Peeler also behind center at times. Cam threw for 96 yards, while Peyton had 76 yards. Defensively for the Chargers, the very versatile Michael McCluney, a safety, had an interception. Looking Ahead- Crest meets TC Roberson this week, a team they knocked off last season 38-10. Roberson enters the game unbeaten at 4-0, including wins over Freedom and East Rutherford. The Kings Mountain Mountaineers (3-1) The Mountaineers must have wanted to prove something to themselves after scoring no points in a loss at Forestview the week before. A fi nal score of 62-16 did the talking as Kings Mountain got back on track taking it to East Rutherford. Kings Mountain had nearly 500-yards of total offense after scoring 9 touchdowns, which was all nine times the offense had possession of the pigskin during the game. Contributing to the scoring was Running Back Darian McClain, who had 4 of those 9 TD's, including a 55-yard score. In all, Darian had over 100-yards on just 12 carries. As a team, the Mountaineers had 382 rushing yards and 108 in passing. The big fullback Trevon Wilson added a touchdown, as did reserves Mike Toms and Kaylon Wade. Lets not forget that the offense was led by their Quarterback Darian McClain, who early in the game connected with Kavin Mosely on a 21-yard touchdown pass. The KM defense did their part sacking Chase's quarterback 4 times. This Friday, in what will be their second South Mtn. Athletic Conference (SMAC) game of the season, Kings Mountain host county rival Burns, who they defeated in 2015, 14-0. The Golden Lions didn't have to produce the typical kind of large total offensive numbers they have so far this season – yet they still scored over 50 points. Total offense for Shelby was 275 yards - 161 passing and 114 in rushing. This included Quarterback Malik Sarratt's continuing of his sensational season, completing 6 of 11 passes in the Lions spread offensive attack with 3 passes for touchdowns and one short run for a rushing TD. Running back Xavier Brooks had 3 touchdowns of his own and this came from only 8 runs to go along with a 73-yard kickoff return for a score. Xavier ended up with 139 yards on the ground overall. The warrior on defense, Junior-Dax Hollifi eld, led the way, as he walked off the fi eld that night with 7 tackles in the contest. Next for the unbeaten number one 2A team in the state is another Rutherford County foe, when Shelby visits Chase this Friday in SMAC play. The Golden Lions won last season's meeting 48-14.
