SEE CONFERENCE PAGE 4 WHAT'S INSIDE Quartzsite Youth attend League of AZ Cities & Towns Conference By Jonathan McElwain TheLeague of Arizona Cities & Towns hosted their Youth Program on August 24, 2016 in Scottsdale with 190 youth from across the state. Members of the Quartzsite Youth Council (QYC), Rhiyanna Timberlake, Karl Briesch, and Jonathan McElwain were able to take part in the Parade of Flags prior to Opening General Session. After being recognized by the League president and escorted to their meeting room and assigned groups, youth and chaperones participated in a scavenger hunt across the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess grounds, breaking the ice, the youth had the chance to work with members from different city/town youth councils. Primary Election results By Shanana Rain BearCat Quartzsite voters went to the polls August 30th. County Elec- tions Dept. released the final re- sults on Thursday, Sept. 2nd. A total of 2,865 ballots were cast in the county, for a voter turnout of 33.52% in Quartzsite. In the race for Quartzsite May- or, Norman Simpson led with 182 votes (40 %t). Dr. Christina Anastasia came in 2nd with 96 votes (21.1%). Robert "Gunny" St. Germain and the incumbent, Ed Foster, each had 88 votes (19.34%). Simpson and Anasta- sia will participate in a runoff in the November General Election on Nov. 8. In the race for two open seats on the Quartzsite Town Coun- cil, Jerald Kinkade had 198 votes (26.68%), Starr Bearcat had 193 votes (26.01%) and will be seated following the November election. Deanna Sheehan had 178 (23.99%) and Monica Timberlake had 170 (22.91%). A candidate is declared elected to the council if he or she re- ceives "50 percent plus one" or more of the total number of votes divided by the number of seats open. With 742 total votes, 2 seats, min. num- ber needed would be 186. In the Republican race for Sher- iff, William "Bill" Risen received 1,008 votes (49.27%) to 826 (40.37%) for incumbent John Drum and 175 (8.55 %) for Wil- liam "Will" Smith. Risen will face Democrat Frank Vidrine in No- vember. Duce Minor won the Republi- can race for Supervisor District 2. The incumbent for District 2, King Clapperton, chose not to seek re- election. Minor will face off against Independent Lucas Marler and Patrick Jones, who's running as a write-in candidate, in November. For County Assessor race, Anna Camacho with 1,044 votes (52.97%) defeated the incumbent Sharon Schuler who had 926 votes (46.93%) Mohave and La Paz County's vot- ers chose Paul Mosley and Regina Cobb to move forward as the Re- publican contenders for two Dis- trict 5 State Representative seats in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 8 Quartzsite's Jennifer Jones lost her bid again. Mosely and Cobb will face off against Demo- crat Beth Weiser.
